David Lupberger on How to Replace a Sprinkler Head: Hi, I'm David Lupberger with ServiceMagic.com. If you have an automatic sprinkler system, there is one thing you're aware of. Sprinkler heads break. It could be they get hit by a lawn mower, it could be a child kicks it when the sprinkler is running and they're out playing. There's one thing though that saves the day. They're easy to replace. So I've taken the liberty of digging this down around the base of the sprinkler. And you want to dig deep enough when you unscrew it, and honestly this can be done by hand. I want to make sure that the dirt is below where this connects. I'm unscrewing this to take this to a good home improvement or hardware store, because I want to make sure my replacement sprinkler head is a ?? inch female fitting. So now I'm going to go to the store. Lupberger: So this is the new sprinkler head. It's got the ?? inch female fitting. And this one has an adjustable spray head. What that means is when the water pressure pops this out. I can adjust the spray. And because we're looking at a spray, I want a 90 degree spray. I'm going to adjust this at 90 degrees, but if I want a 180 degree spray I could even open it further. Lupberger: So what I've done is I've taken plastic plumber's tape, very thin tape. And I've wrapped it around the male fitting, so what happens is when I install the sprinkler head and screw this down it will create a tight, watertight fit. The last thing you want to do is check the sprinkler head and check the direction of the spray to make sure it is the 90 degree spray or degree of spray that you're looking for. One last thing before you put the dirt back in, turn the sprinkler system on and do two things. Check the direction of the spray, and check for leaks. You want to do that before we fill the hole back up. And that's how you replace a sprinkler head.
