"We had a huge attic that was barely usable for storage since it was too hot in the summer to safely store most items. We hired Richmond Homes to build out both a new guest room and a "clean" storage room in the attic, add flooring and lighting to the rest of the attic and replace the flooring in the existing bonus room to give the whole upstairs a cohesive look. They were able to translate my fuzzy ideas into fabulous new spaces with attention to detail and top quality work. I work recommend them to anyone looking for a reliable, high quality contractor."

"Amazing service, so professional and job was FINISHED just one day after my original ServiceMagic request. These are some very talented people...what has started out as a painting project is now leading into a kitchen redo, bookcases/fireplace install and french doors. Chris was so very knowlegable and easy to talk over ideas with...no pressure, just solid ideas from years of experience. Steven was quick with a very fair estimate and communication was excellent. "Shorty" was such a hard worker and so polite as well! I highly recommend this business...Thank you so much for such a positive experience and I look forward to future projects!"

"Pursuant to a recommendation by a kitchen designer, my wife and I met with Mr. Bachert.  We knew that everything in the kitchen space had to be replaced, including flooring, electrical and lighting, plumbing, appliances, etc.  During the meeting, Mr. Bachert explained to us his recommendations and pricing.  He did not hold back.  We were impressed by his immediate response to our questions and his straightforwardness.  I should note that I have a better than average knowledge in such matters, having remodeled two homes.  My wife and I had no problem with what Mr. Bachert told us about the quality of materials he would use and the workers who would do the various jobs.  He assured us that required official inspections would be done timely as required. Most important was the quoted price - "right on the money," so to speak.  It was exactly the amount I estimated.  We contracted with Mr. Bachert the next day when he presented his proposal.  The work began timely, giving my wife and me opportunities to choose tiles, appliances, etc.  It was obvious to us that the workers were a team and performed that way.  Although there were unfavorable surprises as the old kitchen was torn out, the workers handled such obstacles as routine.  There was never a time when my wife voiced concerns that were not immediately put to rest, and I must say that she inspected almost every detail and asked questions along the way.  The renovated bathroom was a snap - couldn't be more attractive.  We are greatly pleased with our new renovations.  Oh yes, several friends and neighbors stopped by to see the progress of the work being done, and inspected the completed job.  All of them have told us they were impressed by the quality of work and attractiveness of our kitchen and bathroom.  One couple has requested Mr. Bachert to prepare a proposal to renovate a section of their home.
While the work was being done, my wife and I agreed that it would be a good time to seriously consider the major addition that we had thought and talked about for a long time.  Mr. Bachert, said "sure" he could do what we describe to him.  He gave us a ballpark idea of costs, including surveys, permits, and other requirements.  That, too, was favorable, considering our budget.  Today, we signed another contract with Mr. Bachert.

"In October 2024, Josh and his team at Coastal Builders LLC helped us in addition to the house for eldercare. This was an extensive project that included a carport, and an additional room to the house that included a safer bathroom and a wash area. The entire team were excellent in informing us about the progress of the addition to the house. Any questions that the owners had were promptly answered. When issues arose, Josh always offered solutions and sought to make sure that our preferences were accommodated. He even offered to run small errands for us. We recommend the entire team at Coastal Builders to anyone who has a project."

"The actual roofing job in 2014 went fine. We were pleased with the initial work and the price. However, the company’s follow up is sorely lacking. They responded when we had a concern about some of the new roofing within a couple of weeks. Our second issue it took much longer to get a response from them. Now in 2019, we have been trying to get them to come and check out our roof for hail damage. We can’t get anyone to call us. Just some texts and passing off of responsibility. Their customer service is poor."

FAQs for new home building projects in Wilmington, NC

The affordability of wood species varies by region and availability. Eastern white pine represents the most economical option for many areas, while Douglas fir offers a mid-range alternative with excellent strength characteristics. Oak and other hardwoods command premium prices, but they also provide superior durability. Your choice should balance initial cost against long-term performance needs and the structural requirements of your specific design.

Timber frame homes require the same basic building permits as conventional construction, but may need additional engineering documentation. Some jurisdictions require structural calculations and stamped drawings, particularly for designs with large open spans or unusual load distributions. Local building departments might have specific requirements for timber connections and fire resistance ratings. Consulting with officials early in your planning process helps avoid costly surprises.

The construction timeline for a timber frame home ranges from six months to over a year, depending on the project's complexity and size. The frame preparation phase, during which timbers are cut and test-fitted in a workshop, can take several weeks to several months. The actual frame raising can occur relatively quickly—often in just a few days—but finishing work follows a similar timeline to conventional construction. Weather conditions and contractor availability also affect scheduling.

Larger timber members actually offer inherent fire resistance advantages over smaller dimensional lumber. Massive beams char on their exterior while maintaining their structural integrity at their core, potentially giving occupants more time to evacuate during a fire. This contrasts with thinner framing members that can fail more quickly when exposed to flames. However, comprehensive fire safety depends on multiple factors, including insulation materials, interior finishes, and properly designed electrical systems.

Timber frame construction adapts well to diverse climate conditions when proper design considerations are taken into account. In cold regions, the structure pairs excellently with high-performance insulation systems. For humid environments, selecting, treating, and managing moisture in wood becomes critical. Coastal areas may require special design considerations for wind resistance and salt exposure. Working with designers familiar with your specific climate ensures the selection of appropriate materials and construction details for long-term performance.
