"The crew arrived on the date/time promised. They were polite, professional, and worked non-stop (except for 2 short breaks and lunch). Because of my landscaping, the crew determined the best way to get to the bottom of the foundation was to dig a hole—24” x 8’. It was truly impressive—perfectly squared off. They sealed the wall, replaced the dirt, and replaced decorative stone. They then installed a 50’ French drain—trenching, refilling the trench, and removing excess debris. The crew worked as a team, did a top-notch job, and left the job sites better than they found them. It took them 4 days—and they never wavered from an extraordinary work ethic. That was last week. This week? We’ve had torrential downpours and flooding—but my basement and garage are dry. I’d hire them again in a heartbeat."

"No complaints. They put the shed up in less than 2 days. Looks great and I have already started to fill it up. Got a quote for some basement framing work seems fair but I need to get other quotes to be sure."

"Chuck did a great job on this job. Chuck worked with us to create stairs into our attic space, handled permits with Waynesboro City so I didn't have to, hired an architect to draw up required items, spray foam insulation for the new attic space, installed 2 new windows with child safety and fire safety in mind, drywall, replaced our outdated electrical box with a new one and ran new wires/outlets to the upstairs space including the closet and stairwell, redid the flooring under the stairs where the closet would be so it would match up to our existing flooring, he provided not only a rough estimate but his rough estimate was VERY close to the actual amount required for the job. This was including some additions to the original quote so I was very pleased with the cost and very much so with the final result. He and his crew worked well making great strides and finished the initial demo/framing etc early while waiting for the stairs and windows to arrive. Once these arrived they jumped back on the project and finished it up as soon as possible - working with us when we could jump in to start the painting, staining and poly coats on the oak stairs and flooring in the closet. He provided a great rough list of items for the contract and terms of payment as the project progressed. I felt like each step of the way he communicated well on where we were at, any potential or actual delays and why, when his crew would be doing certain items with a rough timeline of what certain items would be done ... like x will be done the 1st week, 2nd week, etc, and it was very accurate and things got done. I'm a bit OCD and was relieved that I could share our vision with him and let him run with it - it turned out great and well worth the money! I would highly recommend Chuck to anyone else. <br /> Thanks Angie's list! <br />"

"Mid-Atlantic provided a solution which is guaranteed to last for the life of the house.  The workman worked very hard to contain the dust and clean up after they were done.  Our basement is dry!"

"I would highly recommend Helping Hands Construction and Handyman Services to anyone who needs home repairs or home remodels and renovations. I was provided with creative and innovative solutions and was able to envision the potential of what my home could be instead of what it is now. They operate with integrity that I know I can trust and they take pride in their work. They were excited and motivated about providing me with excellent customer service. I really enjoyed working with them and would definintely recommend them!"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Bassett, VA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
