Small jobs welcome

"Mr. Crockett engineered a house for me in Slidell, Louisiana: 1600 sqft and raised 10' off the ground in a coastal flood zone. He seemed to be the only local engineer who could be bothered with such a small project. His plans passed St. Tammany inspection. My only issue with him was related to our communication during the revision process of the plans. Ultimately he provided everything I wanted. I would definitely use his services again and recommend him."

"Very well Mr. Crockett was wonderful. He not only drew my plan up he also helped me get all the correct permits that I needed. He really went over and beyond to help me . Without his help I would have been lost. I will definitely keep in touch with him to let him know how I'm coming along with the house. And if anyone needs a engineer I will definitely recommend him. Thank you you are the best."

"Overall pretty good, Charlie showed up w/ professional/courteous staff when he said he would;  Focused on job, worked w/ me on sorting out Customer preferences as neither of us had used these materials or gate kits before.  Staff stayed busy and completed the work.  Came back 2nd trip due to missing matls (Customer supplied). <br />"

"From start to soon-to-be finished work, Gandolfi & Associates has lived up to every expectation. Owner, Eddie Gandolfi has been wonderful. It is important to note, that I consider myself to be pretty hard to impress and even have a mild case of post-Katrina contractor PTSD. <br /> After going to his website and following several links to completed projects he has on YouTube, I was satisfied that my deck replacement was well within his capabilities. Its also worth noting that Angie's List only shows Eddie Gandolfi in certain limited areas on its website, but Eddie's company does way, way more than what they show here. They do just about everything: decks, roofing, concrete, stucco, carpentry, the list goes on and on... <br /> We have two decks/balconies projecting from the second floor that appear to never have been sealed and were in pretty bad shape. Eddie and his men worked very hard and were polite and professional. We are very happy with their work. <br /> We asked Eddie to treat our house as if it were his own and to do that which he thought needed to be done. And that is exactly what he did. The structural integrity of our decks was fine, so we ended up replacing the exterior wood only.  Eddie didn't try to scare us into replacing that which wasn't necessary in order to jack up the price. We found him to be completely trustworthy. We are extremely grateful to have found a contractor we can trust and have back in our home for many years to come.  <br /> <br /> <br />"

"Excellent. The 100-year old home consists of an upper unit and a lower unit. Each unit has its own challenges. Buddy did the inspection and we were very pleased with his thoroughness and attention to detail. He is very easy to work with and has a great deal of knowledge about the quirks of older homes. We learned a lot about the house from him. Highest recommendation."

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Belle Chasse, LA

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
