Small jobs welcome

"Eric was fast, efficient and personable. He had everything needed with him onsite and when I came back, the furniture was in place and looked perfect. He warned me not to put anything on it for three days to cure properly. I was very impressed."

"We have been very impressed with Phil's craft and workmanship. We had a coffee table that was kicking around the garage for years, but couldn't get ourselves to throw it out for sentimental reasons. It had damaged veneers, wood and hardware and we also wanted to change the stain which is hard to get right on a combination piece (wood/veneer). Phil's advice was on point and very knowledgeable and his price was affordable. Delivery was prompt and without surprises. We then had him refinish an oak side table we had that was pretty ornate. We couldn't be happier with the results. Both pieces look brand new. We are looking forward to re- upholstering the dining chairs next. Highly recommended."

"It looks better than it did when we bought it. They also helped realign the hinges when they realized they were a little messed up. They are very nice people who know their business. Would strongly recommend to anyone in need of furniture repair."

"Scott was excellent to work with. He provided an estimate, and picked up the table at an agreed upon time. When he delivered the finished product, I could not have been more pleased. The quality of his refinishing work was second to none, and closely matched the overall color of the table prior to the fire. Once I saw the table, I knew that I had made the correct choice in having the table refinished vs. buying a new replacement table."

"Amazing service and attention to detail from quote to delivery.  They contacted me several times during the process to check on important details to assure job would be perfect.  Delivery staff was able to manage tight staircase that the original furniture delivery company could not.  Price was very competitive given the size of the job and high quality.  The best experience I have had with a reupholsterer, and I've had many.  Will definitely recommend UR&SF to friends in the trade.  GREAT JOB! <br />"

"Excellent. Table surface was badly damaged by leaking solvent material, Harry C. Johnson  & Son Company was able to refinish the table surface to perfectly match the rest of the dining room ensemble. Table looks better than it did when we first purchased it. Appointments for estimate, pickup, and delivery when completed were right on time. Work was completed ahead of time. Pickup and delivery was very professional with extraordinary care demonstrated for both the table and the other furniture and surfaces going out and coming into the house. This is the second time we've used this firm and would readily do so in the future. Highly recommend them. <br />"

FAQs for furniture refinish projects in Bethesda, MD

A complete table refinishing project requires between four and eight days from start to finish. The actual hands-on work takes between two and 10 hours, with the remaining time dedicated to drying periods between applications. The stripping and sanding phases demand the most active labor, while applying finishes requires patience as each layer dries completely before proceeding.

Several elements influence dining table refinishing costs, with size being the primary factor. Larger tables or those with extensions require more materials and labor time. The wood type matters significantly—hardwoods may need specialized treatment compared to softer woods. The table's current condition also impacts pricing, as damaged surfaces need repairs before refinishing can begin.

Refinishing often proves more economical than purchasing a comparable quality replacement. Professional table refinishing costs between $150 and $400 on average, while preserving the original craftsmanship and character of your piece.

This approach makes particular sense for well-constructed wood furniture that would be expensive to replace with similar quality. For sentimental pieces or antiques, refinishing also maintains their history and personal value.

Professional furniture refinishers charge between $40 and $100 per hour for their services. This rate varies based on geographic location, the refinisher's experience level, and the complexity of the project. Some professionals offer project-based pricing rather than hourly rates, especially for standard-sized pieces like coffee tables or end tables. When requesting quotes, ask whether the estimate includes materials or represents labor costs only.

For tables with minor wear, you can sometimes refresh the appearance without complete stripping and sanding. Using gel stains and wipe-on finishes can address surface issues while preserving the existing finish underneath. This approach works best for tables with light cosmetic damage rather than those with deep scratches or damaged finishes. However, proper stripping and sanding remain necessary for comprehensive restoration or significant color changes for professional-quality results.
