"The repair technician was very skilled in his assessment of the problem. He talked with me about a couple of options and gave me his recommendation. The job was done well and very quickly. I would definitely hire All Furniture Services again."

Small jobs welcome

"Eric was fast, efficient and personable. He had everything needed with him onsite and when I came back, the furniture was in place and looked perfect. He warned me not to put anything on it for three days to cure properly. I was very impressed."

"We met Tea some years ago when she completed a 3D rendering for a couple of pieces of furniture built for our small dining room. The job had been completed by two other people who then moved on to another business.
We contacted Tea when we could not find an adequate replacement for a vanity and after learning that she has been working with her husband, we set up a time to meet.  This meeting took place at the end of April.
Tea and George came to our home and carefully listened to what we wanted, thoroughly reviewed our options and patiently addressed questions and concerns.  It was challenging for us to adequately describe the piece we needed and George and Tea did a fabulous job of elucidating what they heard.  George even drew a sketch to help us "see" the piece he thought we wanted.  They then took careful measurements.
We had no idea how expensive this piece of furniture would be and when George gave us an estimate of the "ideal" vanity, we were stunned.  It was far more than we expected it to be.  We asked for a price for a less intricate vanity and it was graciously provided. George and Tea exerted absolutely no pressure to opt for the higher priced piece.  This was greatly appreciated.
It was decided that Tea would do renderings of the simpler, less expensive vanity as well as drawings of the more elaborate vanity.
We understood that the cost of the renderings would be absorbed by the cost of the vanity we ultimately chose and would not be covered should we decide to do nothing.  This was very fair and the renderings proved just how fair this actually was.
Tea emailed the renderings soon after our meeting and they were extremely lifelike.  It allowed us to fully visualize the two different options.  She also generously offered to answer any questions we had about specific details.  Emails were always answered quickly and professionally.
We ultimately decided to go with the more expensive option.
We had been told that the piece would not be started until summer and were surprised when Tea emailed in early July to say it was just about to be completed.  I had neglected to ask her to include one small detail, believing that the piece would not be ready until August, and she graciously agreed to add the detail as the piece was not entirely finished.
We set up a date for delivery and as usual, Tea and George arrived on time.  George kindly helped move the old vanity out of our bedroom before carrying the new piece upstairs.
The rendering of this vanity was quite realistic but did not prepare us for the startling beauty of the actual piece of furniture.  We were stunned when George removed the plastic!  The vanity was a work of art!
Not only was the piece a perfect match to our existing furniture,  it addressed all that we wanted and reflected a superior degree of craftsmanship.  George thought of small details to enhance the efficiency of the piece and to ensure its ease of use.  Instead of simply gluing the mirror to the back panel with no concern for future issues, he installed a removable piece above the mirror so that it could be easily replaced should it become necessary to do so.  This is just one example of his forethought and skill.
After seeing the piece, we clearly understood the cost and believe it was an extremely fair price for what we have.
Our experience was completely positive, from exchanges with this engaging, respectful and talented couple, to the finished product.  We highly recommend them."

"In the end, we were more than totally pleased with all the work done by Wilson Delgado. He made several trips (always punctual) out to the country to pickup and return furniture, and also to deliver fabric books and samples for our clear vinyl slipcovers. We had minor glitches as he was unexpectedly called out of the country for a family emergency, but in his absence, I was contacted to let me know the reason for the delay. Then, Covid-19 hit and he was in protective covering when he delivered our last piece of furniture. At all times, he was professional, courteous, and treated our furniture and home as if it was his own. So far as pricing and how long he quoted for all the work-----believe it or not, he was just about half of what the other upholstery shop quoted me, and also the work was completed faster than the other shop. He is truly a talented craftsman that takes pride in his work."

"Excellent look; fabric is beautiful; very professional job; took extra care in finding the right size buttons for the back of the chair; even suggested refinishing the legs which were painted; now the maple wood shows through.  Only complaint is the chair is a little noisy when you sit on it - perhaps it is stiff with the new padding and fabric

"I was very pleased with the performance of Renaissance Restoration and Renovations.  I had several firms out to do quotes for the job.  Mr. Lopez (the owner) came out to do the review.  He took his time, pointed out what might be problems (I have a very old house) and discussed what he would do.  His quote was not the lowest (nor the highest) but his was the most straightforward quote and his firm  seemed the most reliable.  The job went perfectly, the result is more than satisfactory."

"Very professional, prompt response. I had some chairs that needed repair, scratches on my table and some damaged legs on a sofa.  They did most of the work on site and took an antique chest to the shop for complete stripping and restoration.  The work was promised for completion  within 3 weeks and was completed in only one week.  The furniture looked like new and the antique chest was restored to become a family heirloom of great value.  I was very pleased in their level of professionalism.  We had just had our carpets replaces and I asked that they remove their shoes.  They cheerfully obliged.  I would highly recommend Furniture Doctor for any restoration needs, especially due to the convenience of on site service.  I was very comfortable giving them a piece that was near and dear to my heart.

FAQs for furniture refinish projects in Washington, DC

Refinishing often only costs about half of what you’d spend on a comparable new piece and lets you keep the character you already love. Beyond the quick savings, you’re also cutting waste and avoiding the higher price of quality, brand-new furniture. For most homeowners, it’s a budget-smart and sustainable win.

Refurbishing preserves the original finish—think deep cleaning, tightening joints, and minor repairs — to refresh the piece without altering its appearance. Refinishing is more dramatic: Pros strip the old finish, sand, then add new stain or paint for an entirely new color or sheen. Both approaches improve appearance; the right choice depends on how much change you want.

Furniture that is severely worn, damaged, or made from fragile materials such as plywood, particleboard, or MDF is not suitable for refinishing. Items with significant structural issues or heavy deterioration often fail to achieve a quality finish, even after extra preparation. Select pieces with robust construction to ensure lasting beauty and durability.

Refinishing can affect the value of an antique piece. Serious collectors prize the original finish because it shows a piece’s age and craftsmanship. Stripping that patina can lower market value. If the goal is resale, talk with an appraiser or restoration pro before sanding anything. For heirloom pieces you plan to keep, a careful refinish may still be worth it if it protects the wood and lets you enjoy the furniture every day.

Water-damaged or swollen wood is often repairable. If the swelling is mild and hasn’t warped the structure, a pro can dry the wood, sand it flat, fill any cracks, and seal it before applying the new finish. Severe water damage that has twisted or split the frame is more challenging—and costly—to repair and may necessitate partial replacement. Let a refinishing specialist assess the piece first.

Acrylic paint is a top choice for most wood furniture because it applies smoothly, adheres well to primed surfaces, and cures into a tough, long-lasting finish. When you prep correctly—clean, sand, and prime—you’ll get even color that stands up to daily wear. For outdoor pieces, choose an acrylic formulated for exterior use to add extra UV protection.
