"We heard about Elena's Antique Restoration from the moving company that had damaged our antique chest of drawers. They always use them whenever they have damage occur to their furniture and recommend them to other people. We had the damaged piece delivered to the restoration shop where we met with the owner. She was very professional and a delight to talk to. She understood what we wanted and we were contacted a few days later with an estimate for the repairs. We agreed to the estimate and she told us it would be about 4 weeks for the repairs to be completed. Well, she called us in about 2 weeks and told us our chest was ready. We were totally shocked that it had taken half the time she had figured. That was a pleasant surprise. When we saw our restored chest of drawers we were really impressed. It looked great! We have some more smaller pieces that we will be bringing to her shop in the future. We learned after talking with her that they do repairs and restoration on all sorts of items. We highly recommend using her services and we will be using her again in the future."

FAQs for furniture refinish projects in Birmingham, AL

A complete table refinishing project requires between four and eight days from start to finish. The actual hands-on work takes between two and 10 hours, with the remaining time dedicated to drying periods between applications. The stripping and sanding phases demand the most active labor, while applying finishes requires patience as each layer dries completely before proceeding.

Several elements influence dining table refinishing costs, with size being the primary factor. Larger tables or those with extensions require more materials and labor time. The wood type matters significantly—hardwoods may need specialized treatment compared to softer woods. The table's current condition also impacts pricing, as damaged surfaces need repairs before refinishing can begin.

Refinishing often proves more economical than purchasing a comparable quality replacement. Professional table refinishing costs between $150 and $400 on average, while preserving the original craftsmanship and character of your piece.

This approach makes particular sense for well-constructed wood furniture that would be expensive to replace with similar quality. For sentimental pieces or antiques, refinishing also maintains their history and personal value.

Professional furniture refinishers charge between $40 and $100 per hour for their services. This rate varies based on geographic location, the refinisher's experience level, and the complexity of the project. Some professionals offer project-based pricing rather than hourly rates, especially for standard-sized pieces like coffee tables or end tables. When requesting quotes, ask whether the estimate includes materials or represents labor costs only.

For tables with minor wear, you can sometimes refresh the appearance without complete stripping and sanding. Using gel stains and wipe-on finishes can address surface issues while preserving the existing finish underneath. This approach works best for tables with light cosmetic damage rather than those with deep scratches or damaged finishes. However, proper stripping and sanding remain necessary for comprehensive restoration or significant color changes for professional-quality results.
