I've spent a lot of time helping my neighbors with repairs, and heard stories like plumbers wanting $800 to fix a leaking sink sprayer, or $500 to fix a leaky sink handle. (Those combined repairs used $36 in parts.) HVAC technicians being told to always make sure to change out a part if they go to a call, even if it isn't bad.
