My water heater went out nearly two weeks ago the night before we took a week long trip.  Since we had another place to take showers, we got the company  we use for other ac/heating service to shut down the water heater and also got a proposal from them which was around $2200 for a water heater of the exact make (State) as the one which went bad. 

After reading some water heater reviews, we decided we'd prefer a Rheem, so didn't use the first service provider. 

We got a quote from another plumbing co which was roughly the same (only about $150 more) as the Water Heater Experts quote, but saw in Angie's List that they only had a "B" rating. 

Seeing that Water Heater Experts had an "A" rating and specialized in water heaters, I called them and discussed our needs with them to see what they had to say. 

Unlike the other plumbing company, they did not try to "upsell" me in any way.  In fact, they did more of a "downsell" and probably lost out on what would have been a few quick "sucker" bucks (not really, I'm not that gullible). 

Anyway, from my discussions with both the boss and the installer, I decided to just get the basics done and see how well this higher rated Rheem water heater performs.  Their labor guarantee made that a comfortable decision.

Also, I learned from them that a few simple things like regularly draining the water heater once a year or so could prolong the life of the water heater (and that the problem isn't necessarily a bad water supply, as another plumbing co tried to sell).

My old "State" brand heater started leaking after 8 years use.  Oddly enough, though, Water Heater Experts told me that my old water heater was actually BUILT much longer ago  and showed me how to determine this based on model/serial numbers.

Since I have rental property with the identical brand (only 40 gal instead of 50), I checked and found that it is also MUCH OLDER than I had thought. 

I'm planning to drain that tank soon to see what kind of goo comes out.

Great service, good advice, good prices, and a better warranty on labor than the other guys I checked. 

And if I ever need a replacement (maybe for the rental), I'm DEFINITELY calling the Water Heater Experts AGAIN.

"Rick was excellent. Our water heater died during a cold snap in January. We called another plumber, he tried to revive our old Navien water heater that was located outdoors, but it was beyond repair. The other plumber gave us an estimate to install a new water heater in our garage. It was way too expensive. We called McCoy, and he gave us a very reasonable estimate, given that the gas line had to be extended from one side of the house to the other. Rick listened to our concerns and objectives, and provided what we wanted. Josh and Taylor showed up and worked quickly and efficiently, and it was a long day at that. "Did not go well. The brief plumbing inspection was something my husband and I do anyway. Turned on faucets and looked under cabinet to see if they leaked. The super deal cost $49 because it included a hot water heater flushing, the only real reason we hired them and paid for the “deal.” When time came to flush the heater, the nice young man said apologetically that they don’t usually flush heaters more than 10 years old because the sediment built up in the tank could cause clogs that they would not be liable for. Ours is 15 years old, so no flushing. I asked the young man to call his boss and tell him I didn’t feel I should pay for the flush that didn’t happen and THAT THE AD FOR THE DEAL DID NOT SPECIFY AGE OF TANK COULD PROHIBIT RISKY FLUSHING. The boss said I still needed to pay for the service call so I had to pay $39 for basically nothing since no flushing took place. The “inspection” took less than 10 minutes and as I said, consisted of turning faucet on and looking at pipe to see if it was dripping. I was taken advantage of by the boss. His ad was misleading or I would never have bought the “deal.” Angie’s List, you need to do a better job of vetting your “deals” to see if they are misleading!"
