"Foundation Recovery Systems did a great job raising our front porch and a section of our driveway in the summer of 2023. Today we had a follow-up inspection performed by Ryan Swift, a service technician with the company. Everything is still looking good and Ryan was very thorough and professional while performing and explaining the inspection. I highly recommend Foundation Recovery Systems."

"Great. The tech was personal and professional, explaining what happened and what he was doing to fix the problem. The price was also low."

"'ve just moved in from out of state with an autistic kid...I had a washer/dryer delivered during the week and my husband is a weekend commuter. I tried to find breakers panel by myself and tried that one called Laundry. Was ok, but washer was not working, however it was working with extension cord. We called this company and we presumed it was a short, as I tried that breaker...it made sense they asked 160$ to fix it. However, the electrician found another breaker, called Laundry That he pushed in less than 2 minutes ... I was not seeing that one after 15 hours of driving with my special needs kid in the car!!! They charged me 160$ STILL , just for pushing a breaker!!! The owner is rude and in my opinion, instead of adjusting the price to just a service call, he charged me justifying the driving to my house! After they said they were, however, in the area. I was misdirected by their good reviews too!"

"This place is awesome, I called with a sewer back up at 7:00 tonight and they were at our house in West Des Moines by 7:30. Brad was the Service man, he got right to work, had to go about 80 feet with his snake and had it fixed in 45 minutes. He was very professional and a great guy to visit with. He represents your company well! 5 STARS THANK YOU VERY MUCH!"

"Excellent information before the sale. Came at scheduled time and did work in a timely way. Excellent explanation of the system and how it worked. Return to explain the thermostat to me. I was able to reduce the cost significantly by receiving a rebate as part of the Energy Efficiency Rebate Program. It has also reduced my monthly energy bill. So far the new system has worked flawlessly."

FAQs for sump pump or interior foundation drains installation projects in Columbia, IA

Most residential pumps draw approximately 1,300 to 2,900 watts when they first start, then settle at roughly 800 to 1,050 watts during normal operation. The exact number depends on the motor’s horsepower and how often the float switch tells the pump to run. Even at the high end, the electricity cost is minor compared with the expense of cleaning up a flooded basement.

Grab a ruler and an empty 18‑inch‑wide pit. During a steady rain, time how much the water rises in one minute. Multiply that depth (in inches) by 60 to calculate gallons per hour, then add 50% for safety. If the result tops 2,100 gallons per hour—about 35 gallons a minute—you’ll need a 3/4‑horsepower unit. Anything lower, and a 1/3- or 1/2-horsepower pump should do the trick.

Loud rattling, constant cycling, or shuddering vibrations are the pump’s way of telling you it’s on its last legs. Musty smells, higher electric bills, and visible rust are other red flags. If the unit is 10 years old or older and exhibits any of these symptoms, replace it before the next heavy rain turns your basement into a wading pool.

You don’t have to hire a licensed plumber, but you should still bring in someone who installs sump pumps for a living—whether that’s a plumber, basement‑waterproofing specialist, or experienced handyman. They know the local codes, can wire the pump safely, and will test the system before they leave. Skipping professional help might void the warranty and could leave you with a pump that fails when you need it most.

Not every basement needs a pump, but if your home sits in a floodplain, has a high water table, or has ever taken on water during a storm, a sump pump is inexpensive insurance. For basements that only struggle with condensation or the occasional damp spot, sealing cracks and improving drainage may be all that is needed.
