"Hal's work is top-notch but I grew increasingly frustrated with the timing and inconsistency of his work habits. His was one of several estimates I received and basically he said he would beat any estimate I received. The difference is that everyone else was going to use cedar and he only works with pressure-treated Southern yellow pine, which is less than half the cost of cedar. I was unsure of the durability and longevity of that product so I did extensive research online. Still unsure, I drive around the Twin Cities to see other jobs Hal did that gave stood the test of time and I decided to move forward. Clearly, the way he builds his fences require considerably more manual labor than those built with cedar posts and pickets so essentially instead of paying for the higher cost of cedar, you pay for increased labor costs. Unfortunately, Hal isn't as going as predicting when he will get jobs complete as he is completing them well. He was over a month late in getting started and I repeatedly had to call him to inquire about the delay. It was quite frustrating but since I didn't absolutely need the fence done by a certain date, I decided to practice patience. Once he finally started, most days he and his helper only worked 4 hours so the project dragged on far longer than I thought it would. Admittedly, there were a couple of weather-related days but other times when it was a perfect day, they wouldn't show up and I would give no idea when they were coming again. After I told him I really needed to have him be more communicative, he was and within a short time after that conversation, he completed the fence. The fence is beautiful and appears very sturdy. We'll see how it withstands time and weather but for now I am very happy with it. Hal does beautiful work but if you are on a strict timeline I would not recommend working with him. If you are flexible and don't mind putting more effort into communication, he is a great person to work with.

"Everything went great! They were able to come out and do an estimate within a week or so. The work was scheduled out a few weeks after that and everything looks great. The workers were courteous and considerate of my property; they walked me thru the process as they were doing it and had me inspect the work before they left."

Clint arrived on time for our sales call. He was prepared with information and samples and provided guidance when needed.  We wanted to think about the purchase, since it was an expensive shade option - he did try really hard to get us to make a decision before he left.  I wasn't crazy about that - it felt pushy.  Clint was very upfront about the cost being more than most awning companies, but he did all the measuring and the product is a quality product.  We liked the product and the Angie's List discount that was offered, so we called him back within a couple of weeks and made the purchase. 

The installers arrived on time and were very careful to remove all the deck furniture before starting work. They cleaned up after themselves and put the furniture back when finished.

Our awning is quite large - 30 feet long.  It does a great job of shading our deck and looks very nice.  It's motorized; the wind sensor is great since it almost takes care of itself. We would definitely get an awning again and would recommend this company

"From day 1 it was a night and day experience. They actually showed up, so they were already off to a better start. Worked with the city and structural engineer to ensure safe completion of structural work, worked with me on layout and design. Work area was always tarped off to avoid dirtying up the rest of the house, and the worksite was so clean I wanted to hire them as housecleaners afterwards. Very respectful of our property and time, and our money. There were a couple change orders, and I was on the front of them every time- I knew what was going on, I was able to make decisions on which way I wanted to go with things. There was constant updates and communication, they were always willing to meet me onsite to discuss progress. Their subs were great as well. I had a lot of changes and additions I made during the project and they were happy to accommodate. I was never in the dark on anything- always knew where my money was, if there were delays, if we needed to change or update something. We've already engaged them on another project. I absolutely love these guys and would recommend them to anyone. They saved my house. I was ready to walk away from the stupid thing and now it's coming together as the dream house I hoped it would be. "The project went very well. Work started as soon as the city inspector signed off on the permit, and was completed on time. At the end of each day Five Star left the site clean and orderly. They encountered some unexpected hidden problems which they resolved without adding any extra costs to our bill. My new garage/shed was finished approximately one year after I signed the contract with Heinen.  He did a good job of designing the garage (in his head; no drawings) in a way that was economical and works.  Greg Heinen is very personable and generally easy to talk to.  We talked over options and worked through questions and decided on a final design.  My dissatisfaction mostly arises from the length of time it took to finish the work and the difficulty I had in knowing what was going on with the construction schedule. 

Problems started (at least in part) due to heavy rains in June of 2014, which seemed to get everything delayed for months.  I also now (in hindsight) think that because Greg is a relatively small general contractor who works with a number of subcontractors, the delays were due to the availability of many of his subs.  The original start date was to be June of 2014, then pushed back to late July, and then he couldn't give me a date and stopped communicating with me. A crew finally came to demolish the existing garage in late September.  The general pattern was that Greg would tell me when crews would be out, more often than not the crew would not show up on that day, and I would get a series of promised start dates that also did not happen.  Construction continued sporadically in this manner through October and November, and in December I had a garage that was usable (although without electricity except via extension cord).  This spring they finished up with a new driveway (the first was incorrectly put in) and the electrical hook-up.  Some of what I wanted for the garage/shed did not occur and I had to decide whether it was more important to get the garage done or to get it done in accordance with the contract.  Because it was so late in the year, I generally decided on getting things done.  The item that I am most unhappy with is the eave depth. They were supposed to be 18" but wound up being only 12".  Since the roof trusses. were brought onsite pre-constructed, I didn't realize the depth was off until they and the walls were up  so I could measure.  By that time it was late October or November and I needed a garage for the winter.

In general, my experience with the subs is that a few of them showed up when they were supposed to and worked full days, but more of them seemed to show up about 10 a.m. and leave about 3 p.m.  One crew of two showed up at 10 and I saw one of the guys standing around for two hours.  He said they had thought nails would be there, but the right kind of nails weren't there, so the other guy had to get them.  So, it took this guy 2 hours to get the nails (!) and then they left at 3.  On the other hand, the crews that did the framing and put in the second driveway did an excellent job, and the garage and shed function well.  I wonder if part of the problem is that Greg trusts his subs and some of them take advantage of that. Greg seldom came out to see how things were going and seemed to just ask the subs what was going on and simply take their word for it.

In summary, I got the garage and shed we discussed (with the exception of a few items which Greg readily removed from the final cost) and am happy with how it works.  The process of getting the garage, however, is not one I'd like to go through again.
