"My sister, Barbara-Ann March pulled four of these AOPi chairs from a dumpster behind the U of MN Tau chapter sorority house in the 1970’s. Forty-five years later Ackerman’s Furniture Service did a fantastic job restoring them for us! Their craftsmen are so meticulous … real pros. Thank you for bring new live to these 1030’s charmers. ♥️ #alphaomicronpi"

"I probably will not get the job done but they were very helpful. I wanted the table top refinished so I wouldn't have to use a tablecloth and it would be water repellent. They can do that. I sent a picture with the dimensions of the table and they responded with an email giving me the estimate. It was all done online and I didn't have any contact by phone. It wasn't a good or bad experience and I am not sure I could tell what they are like."

"All work is superb.  Anything that was re-glued doesn't seem likely to fall apart anymore.  The sewing on upholstery looks like new. <br /> If you wonder about the capacity and quality of the work performed, then you should tour the workshop area.  He has every kind of hand and power woodworking equipment in existence.  You can see may chairs and tables that are in the process of being worked on.  Glued items are held in substantial clamps.  In the back room is the stripping area where existing finishes are removed when necessary. <br /> They have an extremely large collection of fabric samples to pick from for use when new upholstery is needed. <br /> The store is very busy.  So, don't expect an instant turn-around.  But, it's high-quality work and that can't be rushed if it's going to be done right. <br />"

"I found them on yelp and received an enthusiastic and prompt response. He has a can do attitude and fixed it in a few minutes. Now I know where I will go when I need upholstery repair. What mattered was the attitude. It was quite a positive experience."

"<p>This was not an easy strip project. The original finish was a factory baked on stain which was harder than a rock. I attempted to do the project myself and quickly realized the stripping was to difficult for me. I emailed Terry the owner a bunch of pictures and he gave a price range for stripping only and then stripping and refinishing. He asked to sample a few doors. After meeting with Terry and having a tour of the shop I quickly knew Terry and his crew were personable and true professionals and they had the proper set up for the wood stripping and refinishing. To save money from hiring someone to work at my home I stripped and sanded the cabinet frames while Old Science worked the main attraction (doors and drawers). Terry the owner went above and beyond and came to my home on his way home from work one evening to check my frame work and give me advice. Once the stripping was completed at the shop I was able to stop by and select the stain color. Don was assigned my project. He was kind, courteous and professional as the same for Dan and the others on the crew. When I picked up the doors and drawers Don took the time to give me advice for staining and finishing the frames. My cabinets are beautiful! I love the fact that Old Science uses the old traditional lacquer finish. I feel I have new friends for life with Terry and crew. I highly recommend Old Science Renovation for any type of wood refinishing of your antiques or cabinetry or any kind of wood refinishing.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>PS. I wish I could upload pictures.</p> <br />"

FAQs for furniture refinish projects in Eden Prairie, MN

A complete table refinishing project requires between four and eight days from start to finish. The actual hands-on work takes between two and 10 hours, with the remaining time dedicated to drying periods between applications. The stripping and sanding phases demand the most active labor, while applying finishes requires patience as each layer dries completely before proceeding.

Several elements influence dining table refinishing costs, with size being the primary factor. Larger tables or those with extensions require more materials and labor time. The wood type matters significantly—hardwoods may need specialized treatment compared to softer woods. The table's current condition also impacts pricing, as damaged surfaces need repairs before refinishing can begin.

Refinishing often proves more economical than purchasing a comparable quality replacement. Professional table refinishing costs between $150 and $400 on average, while preserving the original craftsmanship and character of your piece.

This approach makes particular sense for well-constructed wood furniture that would be expensive to replace with similar quality. For sentimental pieces or antiques, refinishing also maintains their history and personal value.

Professional furniture refinishers charge between $40 and $100 per hour for their services. This rate varies based on geographic location, the refinisher's experience level, and the complexity of the project. Some professionals offer project-based pricing rather than hourly rates, especially for standard-sized pieces like coffee tables or end tables. When requesting quotes, ask whether the estimate includes materials or represents labor costs only.

For tables with minor wear, you can sometimes refresh the appearance without complete stripping and sanding. Using gel stains and wipe-on finishes can address surface issues while preserving the existing finish underneath. This approach works best for tables with light cosmetic damage rather than those with deep scratches or damaged finishes. However, proper stripping and sanding remain necessary for comprehensive restoration or significant color changes for professional-quality results.
