"I'm working on a large project in the Pittsburgh area. The building was previously condemned despite being in good condition. In order to remove the condemnation, the city wanted a report from an engineer to verify that it was safe to occupy. Bob came to the site when he said he would and took his time walking throughout the entire structure. He was able to offer insight on how the building was constructed and advice on things we could do to reduce our construction and maintenance costs (which was WAY outside of the scope of work I was paying for). I was extremely pleased with his work. Many engineers & architects come across as dry and dare I say arrogant. Bob was easy going and polite. A breathe of fresh air in that line of work. I would definitely use Bob again and would recommend him to friends or family."

"The entire team at Engineered Foundation Solutions was amazing, from start to finish. Everyone was very personable and professional. Shannon at the office kept everything running smooth and communications were always polite and timely. The crew, Colin, Chandler and Randy worked extremely hard and never hesitated to give you their undivided attention. They took the time to answer any questions or discuss any concerns we had. We certainly felt comfortable welcoming them into our home. Despite some bad weather days, the guys left the work area clean and dry. We just can't say enough about just how great these guys are. This project was a big undertaking for us, Jeff and Bob are the main reason we selected them for it. The attention to detail, planning, and execution is evident from the moment you meet them, and carries through to the completion of the work. They set their own standards high, guarantee their work, and follow through. Engineered Foundation Solutions exceeded all of our expectations, and we are forever thankful for their knowledge, hard work and kindness."

"I was thoroughly impressed with the knowledge and professionalism of Rob Morrow and Inspectioneering. I will use his company again and highly recommend him to anyone. I chose Inspectioneering after reading multiple positive reviews and because, although I am not an engineer myself, I come from a family of them and felt his structural engineering and contracting experience was particularly relevant for the home I was considering. Before the inspection he was prompt in responding to my emails and flexible as we changed our plans several times. He arrived on time, and was well prepared. He was thorough and methodical with his inspection and was happy to explain what he was checking and why. As we went through the home and he identified problems, my confidence in him grew as he was able to explain the rationale behind every recommendation. What I most appreciated, however, was how he handled it when I proposed solutions to problems. He shared useful contracting tips and more importantly was quick to let me know if an approach was incorrect or dangerous. He did this in a bluntly honest but inoffensive way that gained my trust and admiration. We decided not to purchase the home but took way a wealth of advice as well as trust and confidence in Rob. I will certainly be using Inspectioneering for my next home inspection."

"Roy is a very professional, very competent engineer.  I stayed with him for the entirety of his evaluation as we walked around my house taking measurements.  Being an engineer myself (although in a completely different field), I was curious to see what methods and techniques Roy would use.  He was very methodical in his evaluation... as he made measurements he explained to what he was doing at each step of the way, and occasionally asked me questions.   It was an interactive meeting, and at the end I felt like I had a better understanding of what was going on as well as what I should do to correct it. <br /> I will say that based on my technical background, Roy and I agreed that he did not need to write up a formal report, since we had basically discussed his evaluation as he was doing it.  This ended up saving me some money since Roy didn't have to make his report up. <br />"

"We are evaluating options to repair several conditions in the basement and after quotes from service providers that did not seem to be directed at the root problem, decided to call in an engineer. They discussed many of the options we had already considered and we were generally in agreement on what was most effective for our situation. <br /> They were able to provide guidance on one additional technique that we had not previously considered and a number of service providers that specialized in that technique. We are currently working with another round of contractors to implement the solutions recommended by Capstone. <br /> They were also very easy to work with logistically, providing advance advice over the phone, being flexible in scheduling and following-up via email post-walkthrough. <br />"

"I could not have been more pleased with the quality of the workmanship, the professionalism of the crew, and the outcome of the project. I would certainly recommend Cratsa construction to anybody. The crew was professional and punctual-- they stayed on site until the job was complete, and were very kid (and dog) friendly. Their attention to detail was fantastic--any issues we had were immediately rectified without a problem. Would definitely plan on hiring for my next project."

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Glenshaw, PA

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
