"He did an excellent job of inspecting and advising what our options were. Fortunately one of them was to monitor for any change. If we have to have any work done in the future, United Structural Systems will be the first we call. We were very impressed with their professionalism."

"Last year my wife and I had enough with our foundation problems.  Our back basement wall and side wall was cracked form the top of the foundation to the basement floor.  The cracks were so big that water constantly came through during and after heavy rains.  We called several different foundation repair companies, but none of them could provide us with what we knew we needed.  We needed a sixty foot section of our basement wall replaced, but none of the companies that we contacted could provide that service.  It wasn't until we contacted Frank Matyiko, owner of Expert House Movers, that we were able to get the assurance that a section of our foundation could be replaced.  Our friends asked us how they were able to hold our two story home up while taking out such a huge section of our foundation wall.  I tell them like owner Frank Matyiko said to me "we combine over 50 years of structural moving experience with 30 years of foundation repair experience and that's how we get it done."  He provided me with a structural engineer and obtained  the repair permits needed for the job, which no other company would provide.  Frank Matyiko oversaw the entire project from day 1 to completion.  Thanks for saving our home, EHM is awesome. <br />"

"If you need any Stucco work done, this is the company to do the job. Sergio was professional and a pleasure to work with throughout the experience from initial estimate through the completion of the job. This was a difficult job, and the result was incredible, and the cost more than fair. Sergio is one of the most ethical contractors I have ever had the pleasure to work with."

"After getting quotes from 4 different foundation repair companies I decided to invest in the expertise of a structural engineer. Enter, Dave Chilton and assistant Harley. Both arrived promptly and Dave advised me and examined the situation. Harley took tons of photographs of the building and surroundings. After thoughtful consideration, I chose a company to do the work and got Dave's approval. You get what you pay for. Peace of mind is priceless."

"I was looking at purchasing a home that had undergone nearly $40,000 in foundation repairs and wanted to ensure that the work had been done correctly. I contacted several structural engineering firms in Louisville, KY. only to learn that the vast majority of them do not provide structural home inspections and work primarily on much larger projects. Mr. Bradshaw, who is a professional structural engineer certified by the state of Kentucky, arrived promptly with digital camera in hand. He went over the entire outside of the home and the inside performing a visual inspection, taking notes and photos. He showed me two outside walls that were not level, a failing retaining wall, and failing tiebacks. He also determined that a floor that the foundation repair company said was sinking was actually "teeter-tottering," it had sunk on one side and lifted up on the other side. In short, there were numerous problems with the previous foundation repair and the home still had ongoing problems, all of which Mr. Bradshaw documented in an 11 page report complete with photos. Mr. Bradshaw said a home inspector would have pointed out many of the same problems but it was important for me to have a someone who specialized in structural engineering assessments. I came to this conclusion after learning that the foundation repair company doesn't even employ a structural engineer on its staff. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Timothy Bradshaw and Icon Engineering. His work is impeccable and thorough. The money I paid was well worth the peace of mind in knowing what problems I would face with any needed repairs."

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Greenville, IN

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
