"Level Engineering helped me with my backyard designs, including engineering some high retaining walls and planning some drainage required by the city. They were very friendly, competent, and fast. Clifton, my structural engineer, was informative and always took the time to explain to me the steps in the process and design considerations. I felt the price was fair, and I would work with this team again."

"Very friendly and professional. Detailed information provided. We did not go through this company because we went with a different project, however, we would have gone with this pro based off of the quality, service and value he provided."

"I initially contacted Mike at McNeil Engineering to order a survey of a neighbors parcel of land. I had negotiated a purchase price with our neighbor and needed a survey to file the purchase with the Recorders office. Mike had the survey done, helped with my questions about a legal definition and provided the efiles I required. Very complete and competent work by McNeil. I am very happy with the services provided. <br />"

"We called Lynn Draper, who was recommended by our real estate agent, to look at the garage of the home that my husband and I were looking to purchase. Our home inspector reported that the garage was not in great shape, and that we should have a structural engineer take a look at it and make recommendations. I called Lynn's office, and was able to make an appointment within the same week. Lynn arrived on time, made numerous careful measurements and observations, and answered all of our questions. He provided a certified and detailed letter the following day that thoroughly and clearly explained his observations and recommendations for improvement. With this letter, we were able to successfully negotiate a lower price on the house, due to the condition of the garage. <br />"

"We requested several bids from a few roofing companies and when it came down to the initial visit, we knew Aspen was the right choice. Craig came out, answered questions, inspected the roof and the attic and assured us that they could do the job. When it was time to get started, Craig communicated what the job would entail, what to expect, timeline, and verified that all our questions were answered. The project was also completed within the time we were given. In the end, we recieved a beautiful new roof and confidence that the product and workmanship will last for many years without worry. We highly recommend their services."

"Capitol Hill Construction staff held weekly project meetings <br /> to keep us apprised of the project schedule, what we could expect <br /> over the next week, and to answer all of our questions. They even scheduled the <br /> project so that the kitchen & mudroom floors, the most disruptive part of <br /> the project, were accomplished while we were out of town for a few days.  <br />  On the few occasions when an unexpected issue <br /> arose (the result of work done by previous contractors), they notified us <br /> quickly.  They corrected the problems and when they saw opportunities to <br /> improve the situation, they made suggestions and provided us with options. We <br /> appreciated their flexibility in solving problems as they found them.  <br /> As a result, not only are the bathrooms and kitchen <br /> beautiful, but we also feel safer knowing the plumbing and electrical problems which <br /> had existed previous to this project had been fixed. <br /> We reiterate other reviews which describe the workmanship, care, attention to <br /> detail, and the quality of skilled craftsman they employ. They did excellent <br /> work, they showed respect for us and for each other, and every single person on <br /> the job was a joy to work with.   <br /> The best part, of course, is the project was completed ahead of schedule and <br /> under budget!! <br /> It was a pleasure working with Capitol Hill Construction.  They exceeded <br /> our expectations and we recommend them highly. <br /> <br />"

"Arrived on time for estimate. Very good at explaining everything to me in terms I could understand.  After receiving other bids, we decided to go with Doug & Lori @ On the Level.  We set up appointment.  They were right on time.  They went to work so fast I was amazed at what they got done in the short time they were here.  They cleaned up everything as they worked, leaving things really nice.   I am really impressed with there PROFESSIONALISM & HONESTY.  I will be calling them again to do other work. <br />"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Salt Lake City, UT

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
