"This was the first time working with a structural engineer. Kyle was responsive to our calls and questions. He was easy to talk to, exchange ideas with and discuss methods of how to accomplish our ceiling vaulting project and support requirements for strengthening our roof. Level Engineering pricing was better than reasonable."

"Kamal was extremely helpful in surveying the structural integrity of our dock. He went through immense detail to outline everything that needed to be repaired and was very efficient in getting it back to me for our broker in the sale of our home. I highly recommend Alaska engine engineering! "

"Put the house on the market and buyer got a home inspection done.  The home inspector noted foundation issues and recommended a structural engineer inspect the property.  Unfortunately, the buyers called a foundation repair company instead of paying for a structural engineer.  The foundation repair company said work was needed.  The known costs would be over $25k (15k to repair foundation and approximately $10K to repair the tile floor and walls that they would break).  And they added that other issues could arise from lifting the house (broken pipes, cracked ceilings, etc, etc).  We called a 2nd foundation repair company but all they did was look at the 1st company's recommendations and they too wanted to lift the house.  After much agonizing of what to do, we finally decided to call a structural engineer.  And it had to be someone that didn't work for a foundation repair company.  As painful as a $25K repair would be, we would find a way to get the moeny if the work was really needed.  I called Mr. Strahan and got a call back that same day.  He explained what he does and what I can expect.  We setup an appt for 3 days later.  He called the day before to confirm our appt and he showed up on time.  He inspected the property, asking questions about the house (what kind of issues I had, what things I fixed, when I installed tile, etc).  He did note issues with the property but it didn't recommend lifing the house! I was estatic! I asked for a written report.  He quickly added that his report would include everything that he told me.  I couldn't pick and choose which parts would be in it.  He worded it very nicely but it made me feel good that I was dealing with someone that was honest.  And that's what we wanted an honest opinion.  He's report included an assessment of the property, maps, issues with the property, and his recommendations.  We did his recommendations which cost about $3500.  And to think we were so close to spending over $25K for work that wasn't needed.  Best money we ever spent! "

"The project consisted of a 750ft^2 addition which includes two new bedrooms and two new bathrooms. The project was designed by an architect to flow seamlessly with the current house. Scott was quick to come out and quote the project and he covered all my concerns during the bidding process. I have completed other projects of this scope in the past and scheduling and communication always caused the project not to go as planned. Scott performed a "10" in these areas. I always knew what was going on in the project and was going to happen next. Sub-contractors cannot always be controlled as far as schedule but I would have to say that his sub's were as close to perfect as could be expected. <br /> The project had some difficulty and Scott's experience level is why I chose him to build our addition. There is a large drop off of around 20 feet that had to be supported by a pier and beam structure and Scott's framers worked hard to build a sub-structure that was almost as stable as a slab. The interior work and AC add was flawless. <br /> In closing, if you are looking for a fair price by a trustworthy contractor who communicates and strives to be on schedule and produce a great product you have found your guy and don't bother looking further."

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Hutto, TX

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
