"The project was very professionally done, from the beginning to the end. The project took approximately 3 weeks. They (a two man crew) arrived at our home on time each day. They worked diligently and were always asking us to inspect their work as it progressed. If there was anything that we were not happy with, they gladly corrected it. They were professional with obvious expertise in building construction. They were very detailed in their work. We are EXTREMELY HAPPY with the finished product! I would highly recommend this company to other customers. <br />"

"Steve was great. He worked with us to come up with solutions that we were happy with and the marble company agreed too. He did extra work for us too. He did an awesome job. He was prompt, flexible, and he kept the work area clean. He did a much better job in preparing the shower for the marble than the original builder did, there was no comparison."

"<p>We remained in the home during the remodel, and Tom's employees and sub contractors were always very courteous and sensitive to the fact that we lived within the worksite every day.  Very clean and conscientious on a daily basis.  Tom was very involved and easy to communicate with.  Very pleased with the quality of work and unique design ideas he presented.  He worked closely with our architect, Lee Constantine.  When unexpected things occurred, Tom presented reasonable options and did not quibble over nickel-and-dime matters.  Definitley conscious about our budget and end cost was extremely close to his original estimate.</p> <p>Tom's employees were very knowledgeable and talented.  We definitely got to know his employees, esp. Doyle and Michael.  We could trust they would make sure the work would be done right and they were easy to communicate with.  Tom does use some subcontractors who he knows very well and respect him.  The subcontractors who worked with him were just as professional and easy to work with and we would give each an A+ rating too.  As a family living in a construction site, we felt very safe leaving our middle school boys home for short periods, knowing all the workers were conscientious and very aware of our needs as a family.  </p> <p>We are very pleased with the outcome and highly recommend Tom Pearson.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /></p> <br />"

"It was wonderful from start to finish. We had a lot of design ideas and Thomas went through everything with us a few times and we changed some things, he was extremely patient. He had to invent a system to hold up the 83 inch floating shelf because we wanted it to be 6 inches deep. He was very good about telling us what he meant when he used carpentry terms we weren't familiar with. His work is impeccable; everything is smooth, perfectly sized and beautiful. We are thrilled with our new living room! He also saved us money in the beginning by looking behind the paneling only to conclude the the best move was to drywall over the paneling (my husband was convinced otherwise). We had been looking at furniture, and I'm excited to say that we got all that work done for the same price or less than some of the furniture out there and this is custom made! We have truly enjoyed working with Thomas and look forward to our next project with him."

"We were purchasing an older home that had a significant amount of crawlspace damage caused by powder post beetles (as well as other things that needed attention) and to see what we were getting in to, I wanted to call a few different companies to come out and give an estimate on the areas of concern (found on the inspection report). Being in the service industry myself where we thrive on our customer referrals and online reviews, Angie's List was the first place I turned. ARW was one of many companies I pulled up but one of a few that actually had an A rating. They also had a number great reviews to reflect the quality of service I was looking for. I called them to give us a quote while the home was still under contract and not completely in our possession, which proved to be quite difficult with some companies because I was not the actual homeowner yet, but I was going to be the one doing the hiring after we closed. Marty had no problem with this and he understood this was work to be completed after closing so of course I only wanted quotes from companies I would actually consider doing the work. Makes sense right? Marty, by the way, was our Sales Engineer and he came out at his convenience since the home was for the most party vacant and worked up the material and cost to do the job. He had it emailed to us immediately so we could negotiate this, along with some other contractor's quotes (like the exterminator), to our seller. About a month or so later, we closed on our home and I immediately called Marty and his boss, Mike, to get put on their schedule. They were pretty busy not only from work coming in but the heavy rains caused a delay with some of their jobs but they were reworking each and every day with their crews to maximize their work load efficiency. The nice thing with crawlspace repair, is it wasn't affecting us moving in but it is something that needed to be done because of how much damage there was, so I was happy to be worked in whenever they could so they could take care of jobs that needed immediate attention. I would want the same response if our situation was more severe. I understand things happen so I really appreciated their communication and the overall customer service I received. Not to mention when their crew came out, they started in the late afternoon and did not stop until they had the job done which was well into the evening. Despite the long hours I'm sure they had endured for the last several weeks, they were very polite and courteous. It's hard to find people with a great work ethic paired with an even better attitude. I don't remember their names but they definitely deserve a kudos! All of this is the exact reason why I am awarding them the Angie's List Page of Happiness. Stellar service and workmanship. Thanks again!! <br />"

"A very thorough and professional inspection ended up with "This is a landscaping problem, your foundation is fine." When a guy tells you he has nothing to sell you, that's an honest company. Should things go poorly in the future, I would absolutely hire them."

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Indianapolis, IN

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
