"We were very pleased with Scott (SMS Construction) and his proposed estimate for building the deck, footings, permits required, etc. His price was competitive with other contractors. He was extremely knowledgeable and very conscientious in his description of what needed to be done, and how it was to be done in our face-to-face meeting. He takes pride in his workmanship and it shows in the finished product. I believe in his integrity and follow-thru in what he proposes, executes, and finishes. The deck looks more attractive and was constructed much better than the first deck. The stairs to the deck look great and the color of the wood is also very attractive. (We used "brown treated Pine" instead of cedar.) We are pleased and satisfied that our money was well spent on this contractor and the professionalism he exemplified in the whole process. "Sky was punctual, friendly and fair. He helped remove an old, defective storm door lockset, as I was unable to do so due to a stripped screw head. He expertly used a grinder so he could back it out w/ a flat head screwdriver. He also installed a "build-a-branch" contraption in a tree. Because the replacement lockset for the above mentioned door wouldn't fit, he assisted me with installing an "aerial hoop" swing on the "build a branch" for my two 8 year old children to enjoy."

"Hal's work is top-notch but I grew increasingly frustrated with the timing and inconsistency of his work habits. His was one of several estimates I received and basically he said he would beat any estimate I received. The difference is that everyone else was going to use cedar and he only works with pressure-treated Southern yellow pine, which is less than half the cost of cedar. I was unsure of the durability and longevity of that product so I did extensive research online. Still unsure, I drive around the Twin Cities to see other jobs Hal did that gave stood the test of time and I decided to move forward. Clearly, the way he builds his fences require considerably more manual labor than those built with cedar posts and pickets so essentially instead of paying for the higher cost of cedar, you pay for increased labor costs. Unfortunately, Hal isn't as going as predicting when he will get jobs complete as he is completing them well. He was over a month late in getting started and I repeatedly had to call him to inquire about the delay. It was quite frustrating but since I didn't absolutely need the fence done by a certain date, I decided to practice patience. Once he finally started, most days he and his helper only worked 4 hours so the project dragged on far longer than I thought it would. Admittedly, there were a couple of weather-related days but other times when it was a perfect day, they wouldn't show up and I would give no idea when they were coming again. After I told him I really needed to have him be more communicative, he was and within a short time after that conversation, he completed the fence. The fence is beautiful and appears very sturdy. We'll see how it withstands time and weather but for now I am very happy with it. Hal does beautiful work but if you are on a strict timeline I would not recommend working with him. If you are flexible and don't mind putting more effort into communication, he is a great person to work with.

"I think the finishing around the window could've been a little bit nicer. Our basement isn't really finished. It still the brick wall, cement wall.It just seems like it could've been finished off more than it was. They were quick. I didn't see a lot of debris or anything. I know sawing through cement can be messy but they seemed to be very clean and efficient. They were out here pretty quick. We checked around and they were very reasonable."

"The primary reason for re-landscaping the front (north) side of our home was because we were getting water in our lower level with heavy rains.  Since we had to correct the water issue, we decided it was also a good opportunity to give the front of our home a fresh and updated look. Josh Knutson, the owner of Dakota Landscaping, was not only extremely helpful in designing a plan for us, he went the extra mile to work closely with the company that was re-paving our driveway to ensure that all the grading around the house and toward the driveway was correct to direct water away from the house.  Dakota's work was tested within days when the Twin Cities received record rainfalls over a 3-day period.  We didn't have a drop of water in our house!  The whole Dakota team was outstanding.  The employees worked hard, were conscientious, careful, courteous and when I asked for some changes, they didn't hesitate at all.  I liked that the owner worked right along with his team and that their goal was the same as mine - that the job was done right and that we were happy with the end result. I would definitely recommend Dakota Landscaping to others."

"We contacted them for an estimate on our basement.  Initial phone call and connection went well, very professional, quick, and prompt.  Once the rep was at our home he went into a "pitch" vs. listening to what we said we already knew we wanted.  We even had a sketch.  Eventually we went to review the space, take measurements, etc.  We then started to pick out materials......he brought all the samples but then put together an evaluation based on square foot and overall price of our home and used that based on the square footage of our basement to determine a "fair" value........which was $100/sq ft.  That would have equated to over $100,000 basement.  Then he said how much "fairer" their price was at the quoted rate.  We were too far apart in our estimates which is fine with me, but at the end he said if I obtained a quote that was lower ~ to give him a call and they'd see what they can do.  At that point, I believe "no thanks".  Give me your best price up front.  The entire visit took almost 3 hours.  It was a big waste of time for all unfortunately as we had no intent to spend that much.

"Wanted to wait to see how things settled/ weathered, prior to writing a review.   They were very nice and professional, cleaned the edges of the driveway, and put a thin layer of sealant on.  Looked great at first, but over time (six months ) wore down  .... maybe it needs to be an annual thing, or they should put two coats on.
