"I had several people recommend Aqua Clear for water softeners in Knoxville.  I called and got a quote.  They were very professional, on time, and easy to work with.  The only real problems I have is that they didn't really know the details of the product and their prices are absolutely ridiculous.  As a chemical engineer, I understand the details of water softeners and RO systems.  The questions I asked were more to see if they understood it.  Once I got the sticker shock, the line of questioning changed to see if I could understand why the price was so high.  That never really got conveyed to me.  Kinetico makes a big deal about metered backwashes... just about all water softeners have some sort of backwash based on usage system... that that unique other than it is hydraulically metered - that just means that you don't need power.  Water softeners don't use that much power, so the payback is unreal.  As for the water softeners, the resins are pretty much the same, so as long as the system is sized properly and has a good backflush valve, any softener will do a good job if it is applied correctly.  
They do sell other systems than kinetico that are cheaper, but they really won't talk to you much about those.  I wound up sizing the system myself and piecing it together online and it works just fine for less than 1/2 the cost.
