"Jed Hannon is an experienced Structural Engineer. We required two inspections, one for required paperwork and another in order to make a major structural decision. Jed provided both services. We had full confidence in Jed's professional knowledge as well as his informal advice. We would not hesitate to recommend."

"The installation of the baseboards throughout the house, as well as the toe kick in the kitchen, was done perfectly. They did a great job with the seams of the boards and painting. We had 2 areas in our ceiling that needed drywall repair. They completed fixing one of the areas, but the 2nd area did not get done. Our main complaint with this company is that numerous times we had asked them to make my husband the main point of contact throughout the process, but it took a while for them to get the email and phone correspondence going to him. We had to ask many times. The girls scheduling and coordinating were a bit flaky. Also, when the job was completed, the GC called me to tell me the job is done and asked if I was satisfied. When I brought up the fact that the 2nd area of the ceiling wasn't done, he flat out lied to me and said that he had discussed it with my husband and it was likely due to sagging beams in the attic and was a completely different problem than just a small plaster repair. When I told my husband this, he emailed the GC and called him out on the lie, and requested that they deduct the charge from the remaining balance. It was really bizarre and unprofessional. All the emails and phone calls, they were very nice. The work was done quickly and it was well done. However, the folks on the phone scheduling the work could've been a little more on top of things, and the fact that the GC flat out lied about the conversation he had with my husband didn't bode very well. This was no miscommunication (in case they respond to this). I *might* hire them again. We've had a lot of work done in our house, and we've begun to realize that even getting top rated workers off of Angie's List still won't get you quality service all around. I guess I was a little surprised at this company though. With well over 440 ratings, I had high expectations. Only reason I would hire them back is that the work was done quickly and done well, for the work they did finish. Also, the price was reasonable."

"Matt's response was swift. He came and assessed the work that needed to be done and gave what we found to be a fair estimate. Shortly after returning to his office he called back to inform us that he would lower the price because he found that he had a dumpster available for the rubble. As it was a relatively small project he brought an additional worker. Before starting the demolition they searched along the perimeter of the concrete for the presence of lines or pipes. After ascertaining that it was clear they proceeded to cut the concrete into smaller blocks in a professional and efficient manner. No cracks were created in the concrete that remained . They cleared the area of all debris and left it looking nice and clean. They even graciously consented to remove some broken stepping stones that were in the backyard. We were very impressed with their workmanship and the cleanly cut edges of the concrete. Now the landscaper can proceed to putting in sod as there was no appreciable delay because of the quick response. We will have a backyard to be proud of."

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Lake Worth, FL

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
