"We hired Aaron to replace our staircase which was original to the house. He replace the railings, wrapped the newel posts, added new spindles, and replaced the skirts. He was timely with his communication and showed up when he said he would. He cleaned up after himself and left us impressed! We love the work he did and will be sure to reach out in the future should we need carpentry work."

"The whole process went very smooth.  From the first estimate until completion.  JD is very easy to communicate with, and is very professional, and a man of his word.
We have several estimates on replacing our window and doors.  Wood Rot was the highest of the three by a several thousand dollars.  We choose Wood Rot solutions anyway.  And very glad that we did.  His service and workmanship is well worth the extra money.
WE could not be any happier with our windows, and doors.  And would recommend that if you want things done right, I would pay the extra cost and use Wood Rot Solutions.

"Midwest replaced my deck this past spring, and I was very happy with the results. They completed the project on time, on budget, and quickly addressed any punch list items to make sure I was satisfied. I plan to use them again and would recommend their quality work."

"We were very satisfied with the work. Ours is a story and a half home, so some of the surfaces were quite high and difficult to reach. We also had a significant amount of wood rot needing carpentry repair. About 2/3 of our cost was attributable to the painting and 1/3 for carpentry. We had asked four contractors for estimates. One declined to bid, saying the job was too big for them. Of the other three estimates, White Dog and one other were nearly exactly equal and the third estimate was 50% higher. Our estimate was done by Ron Scott and the job was managed by Noah Scott. Most of the work, both painting and carpentry, was done by two brothers, James and Moise. Occasionally they had another man or two for assistance. Noah was helpful in our decisions about the paint colors and quality. All the work was professionally done with much time and care spent in replacing wood rot with 1x6 cedar trim along the sides and back of the house and over the rooflines. Approximately 50 batten boards were replaced. All was carefully sealed and primed before the paint was applied. The paint job included stucco surfaces in the front of the house, which were painted a color different from the wood siding. The job took about 6 days in total. Each night the crew picked up tools, equipment and supplies and either took it with them or left it neatly stored on the property. No mess was left around at any time."

"Al Adriance the owner is a craftsman.  He spent time evaluating the project so that he knew whether what we wanted was feasible.  We have a three story deck and wanted the second story to be kept dry.  He installed the system under the third story deck, which also had skylights included, so he had to specially fabricate the aluminum to allow the light through the skylight while maintaining the water tight integrity of the remainder of the under deck system.  He has many colors, and we chose copper as the color, which has a great look and finish.  In addition to custom fabricating the roofing, he installed guttering and a drain system that was hidden so that the finished look of the cedar deck was not ruined by the gutter/drain.  He also installed lighting and an exhaust fan as part of the project.
He worked from dawn to dusk each day until the project was completed.  He cleaned up after himself and even re-painted areas that were scuffed during the construction process.  All, in all, this was a good experience and we would definitely recommend this contractor for any dry deck system you want for your home or business.

"I had gutter failure from huge storm in KC area last weekend, which caused water to pool in front of a basement window well and led to my basement flooding. I tried calling many other gutter companies, but they all were 2-3 weeks or 2-3 months booked out. the owner of 5 Star construction came out to give a bid, and immediately said that he would take one of is crews off another project to immediately address put up the new gutters so as to avoid further flooding into my basement. He said my situation was way more urgent than his other customers. He had a crew out the very next day to put up the new 6" gutters with splash guards, and addressing some of the other minor siding repairs."

"I called DTS last night and Anthony came over the next day to replace my garbage disposal (GD). He was early and got right to work. He diagnosed the problem and found that there was something stuck in the GD. He swiftly removed the item and I was on my way. I know nothing about GD, so he easily could have replaced it to make a buck. Instead, he was honest, professional and saved me about $400. I will absolutely call him again when I have a problem. I recommend him to anyone."

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Lexington, MO

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
