"I worked along side Nick Crispell for many years and as a licensed professional and structural engineer licensed in 18 states, I can attest that Nick is very knowledgeable in the field of structural engineering, especially as it pertains to residential and light commercial structures. He has extensive experience in forensics, inspecting properties to determine deficiencies and reasons for failures with emphasis on the design of retrofits to restore strength and usability tocompromised structural components."

"Wonderful! The rotten wood was discovered during the demolition for two bathroom remodels. Once discovered the bath remodeling contractor was not equipped to repair the underlying structural damage. A local engineer highly recommended Jeff Hall and Southern Contracting, who promptly came out to assess the extent of the damage that had likely been there for decades hidden behind the walls that were now exposed. He designed a rebuild of the bathroom stack (1st & 2nd floor) to include wall plates, flooring and ceiling structures. He assigned the construction work to a very experienced superintendent, Jeff who has been with the company for 7-years. He came with a crew of three men (Dev, Hunter and Andy). First and foremost, they did a great job! The structure is now stronger than when the property was built in 1929. Plus they were all very polite and very considerate of us as they performed the work. They put paper down on the floors to minimize the mess as they came in and out and also cleaned up well afterwards. It was a really good experience from the first call to their office all the way to the finish. I would highly recommend Southern Contracting."

"We received a letter stating the column supports were fine. He also noted a problem with cracks and slight bowing on one of the foundation walls and provided a drawing showing how to address the problem. The drawing appeared to be a standard detail for adding rebar inside each foundation block - it was not specific to our house. We called several foundation repair companies to quote the repair. Each of them recommended a different approach from the one that the engineer suggested. We also learned that McElhenny's recommended method would have voided the warranty on our waterproofing system. In the end, for $300 we got peace of mind about the structural supports and we learned about a potentially serious problem that was not included in our home inspection report."

"Pete was amazing. He demoed the existing chimney brick, and replace with all new brick once the chimney was rebuilt and properly supported. Pete arrived on time every day, he completed the work timely and did a very high quality job. I would hire Pete again in a second and without any hesitation! Quality, professionalism and respect are qualities you can expect from Pete."

"I HIGHLY recommend American Crawl Space solutions. I bought 100+ year young home in Monroe, GA and needed crawl space encapsulation and a dehumidifier. I asked on the Nextdoor app if anyone had recomendations and Jeremy Ross answered me. He came to my home and gave me several proposals to choose from. He was professional and communicative. The team was thorough and my home feels great! Choose this business to improve your home!"

"JSA provides an excellent foundation solution. It is almost half the price of conventional foundation solutions. The job is completed in one day and is totally finished. saving the cost of hiring another company to do finishing work. The owner was on site working the job. I have used JSA twice and was extremely satisfied. I have recommended JSA to others who experienced the same great results. I would absolutely use them again and would highly recommend JSA to others. <br />"

"I’m disappointed that they don’t give you a written printout of the report included in the fee. Charging an extra $100 to simply have in writing what his inspection found is rather over-the-top! <br /> <br /> I needed the inspection for my own reassurance and not as proof for any home sale or insurance purposes. So, it was not as critical to have anything in writing. But, I like to keep records of everything dealing with my property. <br /> The engineer was good at returning my call and setting up an appointment. He arrived on time and took the time to hear my concerns as we walked around the house. I have two large trees growing very close to my house and a large root running under <br /> the side of my foundation. The root actually lifted up a large concrete slab that was there as a splashguard for the gutter. I was concerned about any possible structural damage done underneath my crawlspace, plumbing or sewer lines. I was considering having it cut down. <br /> He spent about 2 hours doing his inspection under my very tight crawlspace, which I describe as a “belly crawl.” He explained his findings and didn’t find any damage done by the tree root and shared with me that the tree must have a water source under the house since it is growing in that direction. They should just include the report in the inspection fee. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Mcdonough, GA

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
