"I reached out to Burt for help on some assorted home projects for a spare bedroom we are preparing for guests next month. Burt replaced a toilet seat, hung a curtain rod, took down some defective cat shelves from our wall and installed a new cat shelf for us. Burt also cleaned and polished (using supplies we provided) a nightstand and a dresser for us. The curtain rod, the cat shelves, the toilet seat replacement - all went exactly as planned. The bedroom furniture - OMG, I could not believe the difference! The furniture looks like when I bought it 20 years ago. I am so happy with the results. Burt was very pleasant from the start, offered fair and transparent pricing, and overall was a great person to have in our home. I already have another project lined for Burt for tomorrow, including refinishing a damaged wood cabinet. I'm immensely grateful for Burt's help. Very highly recommend. "

"Prior to shopping at Russell's Furniture, I would have rated furniture shopping right up there with car shopping or a root canal on the scale of frustration and pain. It's still not in my top ten favorite activities, but Russell's made it much more bearable. I had researched furniture and furniture retailers on the net, but I had forgotten about Russell's until I read in a Yelp review about how someone bought from Lazy-Boy, but if they had it to do over, they would've gone down the street to Russell's. So we checked out Lazy-Boy and went down the street to Russell's. Our salesman, Danko, (he looked too young to be so knowledgeable) was very patient and helpful. He knows the products very well. He listened to our needs and was able to show us exactly what we were looking for. A week later we came back and bought the recliner/lift chair, and the Flexsteel couch and loveseat (made in USA). I made sure Danko was working and that we purchased our furniture from him. He spent a long time with us and after all, they get paid on commission. We bought the tables, etc. elsewhere because we liked them, but that is another story. We had gone to nearly a dozen furniture stores before deciding. We were very particular in our choices as we don't plan to buy another living room set again. By the time we got to Russell's, we were pretty tired of sitting on one after another couch, trying to find one that was comfortable yet well-constructed. Danko flipped one over to show us how well the Flexsteel couches were constructed. He also knew everything about the recliner/lift chair that we wanted. Delivery was whenever we wanted. We waited a week because we had to get rid of our old furniture first. The delivery was expensive ($200), but they had to assemble the couch and loveseat, so it was worth it. Russell's gave us a 3 hour window, but because someone cancelled and they were already in the area, they called us and delivery took place early. The delivery men were careful not to scratch our wood floors and they quickly assembled the furniture. Overall it was a pleasant experience. I would highly recommend Russell's furniture. Ask for their salesman, Danko, in particular."

"We have 40 year old round kitchen table, the top is solid maple. It is 4 ft across and 2 inches thick. It sits on a metal stand. Over the years it has been refinished twice, the last time about 20 years ago when I did it myself. Since it is very heavy and the top and stand were showing wear I did not want to refinish it myself. After a little phone shopping I settled on Acorn Restoration listed on Angie's List. <br /> I talked to Rick on the phone and received an estimate of $600. The same day Rick and a helper came out to pick it up. After seeing that the stand was going to be a harder job than he thought, we agreed on an extra $75.00. This was still less than other quotes that I received. <br /> In less than a week I had the table back looking like new, I am very pleased with job, and did not expect such fast service. Rick is very easy to deal with, I am pleased. <br />"

"Mike Sims did a terrific job, and I recommend him very, very highly.  He exceeded my expectations, and we are completely happy with the results of his work. <br /> He explained the alternatives and various issues related to the installation clearly.  He was easy to work with.  His price was excellent.  We scheduled the job promptly.  He showed up and did all of the work himself, across more than a week, very timely.  He was completely reliable, did an excellent job of installation, and everything looks great and works perfectly.  <br /> It was a completely satisfying experience working with Mike.  Everything went entirely smoothly; Mike was flexible and reasonable about a few small modifications in the job as it moved along. Just a perfect, simple experience having this work done.  Couldn't be happier about how the entire project worked out. <br />"

"Went very well. I was delighted with the result—excellent quality. Owner Dennis came right on time for both pick-up and delivery. Efficient. Need to leave a message and he calls you back, so call when you will be available to take the return call. No email option. Subsequently hired him to refinish a chair and his crew did a great job on that too. Cost shown is just for the desk."

FAQs for furniture refinish projects in Milpitas, CA

A complete table refinishing project requires between four and eight days from start to finish. The actual hands-on work takes between two and 10 hours, with the remaining time dedicated to drying periods between applications. The stripping and sanding phases demand the most active labor, while applying finishes requires patience as each layer dries completely before proceeding.

Several elements influence dining table refinishing costs, with size being the primary factor. Larger tables or those with extensions require more materials and labor time. The wood type matters significantly—hardwoods may need specialized treatment compared to softer woods. The table's current condition also impacts pricing, as damaged surfaces need repairs before refinishing can begin.

Refinishing often proves more economical than purchasing a comparable quality replacement. Professional table refinishing costs between $150 and $400 on average, while preserving the original craftsmanship and character of your piece.

This approach makes particular sense for well-constructed wood furniture that would be expensive to replace with similar quality. For sentimental pieces or antiques, refinishing also maintains their history and personal value.

Professional furniture refinishers charge between $40 and $100 per hour for their services. This rate varies based on geographic location, the refinisher's experience level, and the complexity of the project. Some professionals offer project-based pricing rather than hourly rates, especially for standard-sized pieces like coffee tables or end tables. When requesting quotes, ask whether the estimate includes materials or represents labor costs only.

For tables with minor wear, you can sometimes refresh the appearance without complete stripping and sanding. Using gel stains and wipe-on finishes can address surface issues while preserving the existing finish underneath. This approach works best for tables with light cosmetic damage rather than those with deep scratches or damaged finishes. However, proper stripping and sanding remain necessary for comprehensive restoration or significant color changes for professional-quality results.
