"The project was very professionally done, from the beginning to the end. The project took approximately 3 weeks. They (a two man crew) arrived at our home on time each day. They worked diligently and were always asking us to inspect their work as it progressed. If there was anything that we were not happy with, they gladly corrected it. They were professional with obvious expertise in building construction. They were very detailed in their work. We are EXTREMELY HAPPY with the finished product! I would highly recommend this company to other customers. <br />"

"Steve was great. He worked with us to come up with solutions that we were happy with and the marble company agreed too. He did extra work for us too. He did an awesome job. He was prompt, flexible, and he kept the work area clean. He did a much better job in preparing the shower for the marble than the original builder did, there was no comparison."

"<p>We remained in the home during the remodel, and Tom's employees and sub contractors were always very courteous and sensitive to the fact that we lived within the worksite every day.  Very clean and conscientious on a daily basis.  Tom was very involved and easy to communicate with.  Very pleased with the quality of work and unique design ideas he presented.  He worked closely with our architect, Lee Constantine.  When unexpected things occurred, Tom presented reasonable options and did not quibble over nickel-and-dime matters.  Definitley conscious about our budget and end cost was extremely close to his original estimate.</p> <p>Tom's employees were very knowledgeable and talented.  We definitely got to know his employees, esp. Doyle and Michael.  We could trust they would make sure the work would be done right and they were easy to communicate with.  Tom does use some subcontractors who he knows very well and respect him.  The subcontractors who worked with him were just as professional and easy to work with and we would give each an A+ rating too.  As a family living in a construction site, we felt very safe leaving our middle school boys home for short periods, knowing all the workers were conscientious and very aware of our needs as a family.  </p> <p>We are very pleased with the outcome and highly recommend Tom Pearson.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /></p> <br />"

"It was wonderful from start to finish. We had a lot of design ideas and Thomas went through everything with us a few times and we changed some things, he was extremely patient. He had to invent a system to hold up the 83 inch floating shelf because we wanted it to be 6 inches deep. He was very good about telling us what he meant when he used carpentry terms we weren't familiar with. His work is impeccable; everything is smooth, perfectly sized and beautiful. We are thrilled with our new living room! He also saved us money in the beginning by looking behind the paneling only to conclude the the best move was to drywall over the paneling (my husband was convinced otherwise). We had been looking at furniture, and I'm excited to say that we got all that work done for the same price or less than some of the furniture out there and this is custom made! We have truly enjoyed working with Thomas and look forward to our next project with him."

"I reached out them about a year ago to look at my basement. I needed help with an old existing waterproof system a different company had installed and also to have someone look at the foundation. Marty informed us that our old waterproof system was an open system and that we might have radon coming through it. Sure enough he was correct! We hired a radon specialist and he was able to install a mitigation system. Marty also inspected our walls and advised that our foundation is fine and we did not need anything done at this time. Other companies tried to sell us $10k+ worth of work. I appreciate his honesty and not just trying to sell us something that we didn't need."

"The owner himself came to my home to access the situation, all other companies I spoke to sent a salesman. He was very knowledgeable and honest. He arranged for 4 piers to be placed and to lift the foundation on the NE corner of my home. Also to repair the mortar at the crack line and on the cement floor. The workmen were very professional and neat. They even moved some plants in the area of the pier placement and replaced them. They placed plastic so that all the dirt stayed off of my lawn. They cleaned up everything before leaving both inside and out. I would highly recommend A-1 for any foundation or waterproofing work!"

"We are preparing to have a pool installed and wanted to be absolutely sure of our property lines. I contacted Banning Engineering was able to speak to the survey crew leader directly. They were able to schedule us within 3 days. Banning handled the preliminary work of researching the dimensions of the lot with the county, and then spent over two hours on our property staking out the boundaries. We were very surprised when we were shown that our property is actually larger than we had been told when we purchased it. Good thing the neighbors are accepting of the new survey!"

"We live on two and a half acres, and recently connected to city water. When we were interviewing plumbers, they agreed that the diameter of our water pipe needed to be larger than was typical because of the distance from the main to our house. But how big? They didn't know, but were happy to guess, saying things like 'Twice as big should do it.' I was not happy with this, because if they guessed wrong, we would have poor showers for a long time. We ended up calling Purdue and talking to an engineer who calculated the correctly-sized pipe, which we then had installed. Our water pressure is great! Now we are on to the next phase of our renovation, and wanted to talk to someone who could advise us on the structural aspects of the renovation. I didn't want someone who would just guess, I wanted someone who KNOWS. Steve knows his stuff. He didn't just give advice, he justified what he said. I am glad I hired him and feel more confident about progressing with the renovation."

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Indianapolis, IN

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
