"Cigano identified a number of important changes to my architectural drawings to strengthen my structure (a car port). The changes recommended and implemented to my plans ensured my Town would issue a building permit. The Town had rejected my initial drawings and required its review and approval by a structural engineer or architect. Cigano really came through and its owner was easy to work with and highly professional. I would highly recommend Cigano."

"I should have done this review long ago. Tony is the best at inspecting houses and I used his services twice. I wish he had been available when the third house I bid on and purchased was inspected. He would have saved me a lot of trouble and headaches unlike the fraudulent House Masters. Please do yourself a favor and contract an engineer such as Tony. You will thank yourself for it down the line. I recommend their services 100%."

"Wes and his brother Mick are absolutely the best contractors! They have been in the business for many years and are extraordinarily skiiled in home renovations. They are an absolute pleasure to deal with. They are honest, trustwothy, very pleasant gentlmen who take great pride in their work. They are no nonsense, starting at 8AM everyday and working a solid 10 plus hour days. They delivered everything they promised and more. My wife and I could not have been more pleased with the quality of the construction, having converted a screened in porch to a three season room in no time. We have done many construction projects over the years from additions, to redoing kitchens and bathrooms to building a custom home. Based on on all of our experience, in our opinion, you would be hard pressed to find a better contractor to deal with than Alfred and Sons Construction. You get your moneys worth and a whole lot more! We highly recommend them!"

"Fernando and Francisco were fantastic! Professional, punctual and reasonably priced. They did a beautiful job rebuilding some stone pillars for us and replacing damaged fencing. Also power washing. Could not have been more satisfied with the work."

"Walt, Max, and the whole crew were absolutely amazing. This was a HUGE project. We basically had no foundation on the back/ side of our house and the 2nd floor overhang was poorly supported. Prior to us purchasing the house the previous owner added a very large addition on top of a very old and poorly constructed “house” . The inspection at purchase did not uncover the issues that we found about two years after when all of the cosmetic touch ups wore off. Walt’s crew ( Supervised by Max) replaced the foundation wall , added piers under the house, replaced all of the floor joists along with new piers, beams, and headers on the 40ft span at the back of the house. This is just some of the larger items because I would be here forever if I listed everything they had to do. Walt kept us informed during the whole project. From start to finish we were on the same page. The house had so many hidden issues but the crew worked through all of it. The price was very reasonable and less then all of the other estimates from competitors. We didn’t have a bunch of surprise increases along the way. He didn’t try to scare us or sell us anything we didn’t need. They are honest and reliable. The results were amazing and so far beyond our expectations !!! They are all so talented. We couldn’t be happier with our choice of contractors!! They have been done for almost a week and we miss them being here already. I will recommend them to everyone."

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Newark, NJ

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
