Small jobs welcome

"Cory completed two projects for me, one out of his area of expertise. He did a great job and I am very pleased with both the quality of work and the customer service. Highly recommend him to anyone needing furniture repair."

"I'm not sure who Refinish First LLC are but if it is the same as Josh at Superior Refinishing Northwest than he did a great job and I would definitely hire him again with other projects. The price was more than reasonable. By other cabinet people I was basically told my cabinets were beyond repair and fresh pain and for at least $10,000 and above they could do the job. The job Josh did was well below $5,000."

"Wow. Great!. Ryan asked a lot of questions before he came out so that we both had clear expectations. He quoted me what the cost for each item was. He did a beautiful job of fixing a large chip in the door of the bookshelf and and replacing piece that had come off of the crown. You would never know either of these had been damaged. He also repaired loose boards on the drawer of the base and put in missing boards to stabilize the crown. In addition he worked with me to discuss options for refinishing the wood on 2 chairs before I have them reupholstered. He gave three several options and prices and recommended the least expensive, because it provided the best color match with out spending a huge amount of money. (He explained that mahogany shows different colors depending on the direction from which you look at it). What can I say except that I am not sure that he charges enough given the amount of time it took him and how painless it was for us to have him come and work at our house."

"Ed was highly professional. He examined the table carefully before deciding the best course of action. He was able to restore the surface without fully refinishing it. I greatly appreciated his expertise and thoughtfulness in recommending a course other than complete refinishing. He completed the work quickly. The restored top is gorgeous, with a nicer surface than the original. Excellent work. It was a pleasure to work with Ed and I recommend him with enthusiasm and without reservation."

"I received outstanding customer service from The Joinery two weeks ago. My husband, son and I were playing hide and seek and in an effort to roust the boys from their hiding place, I jumped on the bed. Much to our surprise and my chagrin, a supporting piece of the side rail broke. I brought the broken side rail to The Joinery, expecting to pay for a new one to be made, expecting to have to wait the usual length of time for custom furniture (8 to 10 weeks) and hoping they wouldn't laugh too hard. I was astonished to be told that; 1. They would replace it within 20 minutes. 2. They would replace not just the one we broke, but the other one, because the rails are made somewhat differently now. 3. And, they would accept no payment because they guarantee their furniture for life. Not even when I protested that the break was due to abuse, not normal use. Everyone who helped was professional, friendly and even kept their laughter to a minimum. All they asked was that I bring in the other side rail when convenient so they could keep the old hardware should someone else need it. I still can't quite believe what a great experience this was, but it certainly emphasized the importance and value of shopping locally and investing in quality. Thank you!"

"Mr. Lim was very personable and helpful with me in selecting a new fabric to reupholster our dining room chairs - backs and seats. He gave me an estimated completion date and service was completed when expected. I am very pleased with the new look of my "like new" dining room chairs."

FAQs for furniture refinish projects in Portland, OR

A complete table refinishing project requires between four and eight days from start to finish. The actual hands-on work takes between two and 10 hours, with the remaining time dedicated to drying periods between applications. The stripping and sanding phases demand the most active labor, while applying finishes requires patience as each layer dries completely before proceeding.

Several elements influence dining table refinishing costs, with size being the primary factor. Larger tables or those with extensions require more materials and labor time. The wood type matters significantly—hardwoods may need specialized treatment compared to softer woods. The table's current condition also impacts pricing, as damaged surfaces need repairs before refinishing can begin.

Refinishing often proves more economical than purchasing a comparable quality replacement. Professional table refinishing costs between $150 and $400 on average, while preserving the original craftsmanship and character of your piece.

This approach makes particular sense for well-constructed wood furniture that would be expensive to replace with similar quality. For sentimental pieces or antiques, refinishing also maintains their history and personal value.

Professional furniture refinishers charge between $40 and $100 per hour for their services. This rate varies based on geographic location, the refinisher's experience level, and the complexity of the project. Some professionals offer project-based pricing rather than hourly rates, especially for standard-sized pieces like coffee tables or end tables. When requesting quotes, ask whether the estimate includes materials or represents labor costs only.

For tables with minor wear, you can sometimes refresh the appearance without complete stripping and sanding. Using gel stains and wipe-on finishes can address surface issues while preserving the existing finish underneath. This approach works best for tables with light cosmetic damage rather than those with deep scratches or damaged finishes. However, proper stripping and sanding remain necessary for comprehensive restoration or significant color changes for professional-quality results.
