"Excellent experience again with Alpha Structural. Charlie Rosenkranz came to see the 3-story apartment building in West Hollywood. We discussed what the soft story retrofit plans will likely include. He's knowledgeable and experienced. We appreciated his professional no-pressure approach and answering our questions. Alpha performed an exploratory investigation of the support structure, as architectural plans were not available. They engineered the plans with city approval. They then consulted with us and provided the approved THP (Tenant Habitability Plan) paperwork. Production Manager Dave Schlaich and Job Supervisor Seth Price met me before construction. Dave went over the approved plans and explained the work that would be performed, and the purpose. They both answered all my questions. Lawrence and Antonio were the main work team. They were very pleasant and answered all our questions. Both had great explanations with Lawrence being very detailed. Seth provided timely progress reports by phone and text. He answered all questions, and provided contacts for automatic shut-off gas valves and stucco work. Despite Covid-19, they scheduled and passed inspections, and completed the work in under a month. We've seen projects by other companies stuck in limbo for months with no progress, so we chose Alpha to avoid complications. They removed all debris, and left the property clean. The tenants and neighbors had no complaints. Daniel Aparicio also explained various issues. Communication with everyone, including the office staff, was excellent. We're very pleased with this experience."

"I hired Beginnings Engineering for a structural project on my 45-year-old home and worked with Jonathon Sipe and Nada. I spoke with several other firms in Orange County first. Most of the alternative proposals leaned toward complicated, expensive “perfect” solutions that might make sense on a new build, but didn’t feel grounded in the reality of an older home. Jonathon took a different approach: he listened to what I was trying to accomplish, worked through the constraints with me, and came back with a solution that made sense in the real world—while still being safe and code-compliant. On top of that, the experience was just… easy. Communication was straightforward, follow-through was solid, and they were genuinely friendly people to deal with. They weren’t the lowest engineering quote, but they were the lowest-cost path overall because their design avoided the unnecessary construction scope other firms recommended."

"Some engineers are rigid with their approach, but with Secutrac Engineering services, I was pleased. They were flexible and helpful, which substantially saved me lots of time and money for the work. They produce drawings and calculations within a matter of days, that was a great advantage."

"Our home had an outdated layout. All the different living spaces were closed off by walls. We wanted an open concept from the living room to dining room to kitchen. After interviewing several contractors, we felt that Pacificland Constructors better understood our needs and their price fit our budget. <br /> Martin and his crew at Pacificland Constructors came in and did an outstanding job! The <br /> first thing that they did was place up plastic ?walls? to block off the dust to the rest of <br /> the home. They also laid down two layers of thick cardboard paper on the ground too <br /> prevent the existing floor from being damaged. After the prep work, they quickly <br /> removed the two non-load bearing walls. Pacificland hired an engineer to do the <br /> structural design of the load bearing beam that would be used to support the roof and ceiling in lieu of the existing wall. A temporary wood wall was constructed to support <br /> the existing ceiling and roof while the crew removed the existing walls. Next they <br /> installed the structural beams, wood posts, and the metal connectors. After the beams <br /> were set in place, the temporary wall was removed. <br /> Once the flush ceiling beams were installed, came all the easy finishing work. The crew <br /> moved all the existing electrical outlets and switches to adjacent walls, installed the <br /> drywall and did the rough taping, and closed up an existing window. Pacificland <br /> Constructors was done in 5 days and did a great job cleaning up the job site. Whenever I <br /> had a question all I had to do was either call, text, or email him. He was very accessibly <br /> and helped answer all my questions during the construction process. I would definitely <br /> recommend and use him again for future projects. <br />"

"2 words.... Smooth ride. I can't express enough truly how great of an experience this was. I have good experiences with previous contractors but not like this one with Meir. I didn't feel pressured into making decisions, he was willing to work with me on the price (because I wanted everything high end), and I was constantly updated with the status of the project. I highly recommend working with this company and Meir. Thank you again for your outstanding work. <br /> <br /> <br />"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Riverside, CA

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
