"T-Rex turned our nearly impassable, pothole ridden private road into a smooth, completely repaired roadway. Working with T-Rex was great, 0scar is very personable and professional, he gave us several options and prices to choose from, and performed meticulous work. We and our neighbors are very pleased with performance and price. Will definitely recommend T-Rex Excavating to others and work with them again for any future needs. Thank you Oscar!"

Small jobs welcome

"Large landscaping garden. They also put in a gravel driveway around my garage. Added two driveway extensions for my extra vehicles. Then added a long extension to park my Semi on to stay out of the street. Also put down a large excellent base for my new Lawn Shed. Plus, a large rock base around a tree on a hill so I no longer have to mow it and now the growth doesnâ t block my view when pulling out on to a four lane highway. Removed a couple of large and annoying tree stumps. . Everything was fairly priced and done in a timely fashion. They will always be my FIRST CALL!!!"

Roger and his team were very pleasant and nice to work with. He was quick to respond to my request, as well as provide the quote. In my opinion, the work itself was B+ in terms of overall quality and closeness of how I expected the job to look, but unfortunately, Angie's ratings don't allow for that option. My primary issue is that the scoring lines in the concrete should be straighter. There is definitely some "waviness" in some of them. The other issue I have is with the dog run, which is gravel and not concrete. Roger was great in building the layout that we asked him to create, which, I would guess is not how most people would have had him do it. But, the top layer, intended to be pea gravel, seems much more like a small river rock, which the dogs are having a hard time getting used to. Smaller stones would have been better. In all fairness, I was actually in the hospital while the work was being done, so his main interface during this time was my wife, who may not have realized the stones should be a little smaller.

Overall, I am pleased with the job Roger and his team did, and would use them again. Pricing and professionalism were great, and he was open to ideas and requests as to how the job was performed. I would just want to make sure I was around while the work was being done to make sure everyone was on the same page and that minor workmanship errors could be avoided.

"Kirt did a great job. He figured out how to straighten out the kitchen floor. Can't tell there was ever a hump there. Kirt and his partner showed up every day on time. Started the job when he said he would and kept the cost to the estimate. I was kept informed of what they were doing and how they were going to do it the entire way. They ran a couple days over the estimated time but they stayed here til it was finished. I love the job they did. My kitchen and bath look great

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Rochelle, IL

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
