"I canâ t recommend Ali enough! A neighbor recommended Ali after another structural engineer was five weeks late getting us our plan. I called Ali on a Friday and he told me he could come out on Saturday to measure and have the plans ready by Monday. He was positive, responsive, and went above and beyond answering all of my questions! It was such a great experience working with him."

"We thought we needed foundation work. They not only told us that was incorrect. They directed us to a structural engineer who would be able to help us. No charge. Most appreciated."

"Very happy with UBS's customer service, timeliness in estimates, and pricing. The crews that show up are professional and always leave AFTER the area is cleaned up. I would recommend them to anyone interested in getting an estimate for a project."

"He confirmed that there was no imminent structure problem and that the structure was better than basic code. The engineer was named Jon. He was a real nice guy. He was someone you would want to deal with as a customer which is good for the company. The price was more or less the going rate if I am not mistaken but I am not sure. The analysis took them at least two hours, maybe closer to three hours. There was nothing that I didn't like. He was knowledgeable and paid attention to detail. Some engineers have poor social skills but he was a nice guy and I went along with him so I could see what he was talking about instead of reading a report. I would recommend them to other members."

"Robin was very nice and answered our questions.  Her husband is a structural engineer, which we thought was great because our lot may need some input from a structural engineer so the team approach was appealing to us.  We met for approximately an  hour.  After we left we sent an email a couple of weeks later with a few more questions and never heard back.  We ended up going with a different architect.  I feel like Robin is much better suited for remodels and additions rather than designing a house from scratch...not that she couldn't do it, but her recent experience hasn't been designing homes.  (our emails may not have reached her and we didn't pursue her further because she didn't seem like the right match for our needs at the time.)  <br />"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Rochester Hills, MI

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
