"Midwest White Glove delivery damaged my Jaques Garcia by Baker Furniture during delivery. They had only the standard $0.60/ lb insurance. I thought it was a straight forward job and didn’t elect additional insurance. They tried to repair a hole in the top by turning the wood over. Dumb move. I called Surface Experts and they immediately came to my home and assessed the damage. I received a reasonable quote and they took the furniture piece and repaired. It looks brand new. The lacquer is smooth and bright again and the hole is filled in, sanded and invisible. I want them to come back and repair my dining room table next. I really lucked upon some good guys that are craftsman. They also repair granite, marble and synthetic stone. I recommend these guys unabashedly and without hesitation."

"The only thing that exceeds their passion for refinishing is the quality of their work. It was a great experience from initial consult and help with color selection to spotless cleanup. Richie has a professional team that communicated well on the project status and treated our house like it was their own."

"I contacted Reliable Handyman Services after seeing all the positive reviews on Angie List and was able to schedule an appointment within a few days for an estimate.  C.W. came out promptly at the time scheduled.  He is a very pleasant man and seemed to be able to give me an estimate that was very reasonable.  The old shower door was over 25 years old and caulking had become very ugly.  C.W. immediately went to work and scraped all the old stuff off the walls and tub.  I won't go into details of how disgusting the stuff under the shower frame was but he was extremely detailed in removing it.   He installed the shower door and beautifully caulked the surrounding area.  He removed the old handles and unfortunately the new ones were not the right size.  This was an error on my part.  He was very pleasant about removing the newly installed handles and put the old ones back. C. W cleaned up everything.   I would recommend him to anyone and not hesitate in a minute to call him for other handyman jobs.  It's great to be able to find reliable people because of Angie's List

"They were very helpful.  Installation was during very cold weather.  They did any cutting that needed to be done on our deck outside.  They cleaned up any mess and were very considerate of our property.  It took two full days and they worked from early morning until about 6:00 pm.  We love our cabinets now and the lighter color really makes the interior not so dark.

"I hired Red Bud Wood Restoration to repair a piece of my sectional unit. Steven was very professional and polite. He was on time when he said he would be there, and got to work quickly on the repair. He kept me informed along the way and did a nice job repairing my furniture. I would recommend Red Bud Wood Restoration."

"Dealing with House Doctors in Chesterfield was a refreshing experience compared to other handymen/contractors I have had experience with.  The owner, Steve, came out to inspect the work that needed to be done.  He then emailed me an estimate that was very reasonable.  I contacted customer service to set up a date for the door installation; the receptionist told me that Dan, the handyman, would be here between 9:15 and 9:30 on the date we scheduled.  Dan showed up at 9:20, and he was finished by 10:45.  I appreciate the promptness and efficient way the job was completed, and the thorough clean up as well.  I will definitely use House Doctors again!"

FAQs for furniture refinish projects in Saint-Louis, MO

Refinishing often only costs about half of what you’d spend on a comparable new piece and lets you keep the character you already love. Beyond the quick savings, you’re also cutting waste and avoiding the higher price of quality, brand-new furniture. For most homeowners, it’s a budget-smart and sustainable win.

Refurbishing preserves the original finish—think deep cleaning, tightening joints, and minor repairs — to refresh the piece without altering its appearance. Refinishing is more dramatic: Pros strip the old finish, sand, then add new stain or paint for an entirely new color or sheen. Both approaches improve appearance; the right choice depends on how much change you want.

Furniture that is severely worn, damaged, or made from fragile materials such as plywood, particleboard, or MDF is not suitable for refinishing. Items with significant structural issues or heavy deterioration often fail to achieve a quality finish, even after extra preparation. Select pieces with robust construction to ensure lasting beauty and durability.

Refinishing can affect the value of an antique piece. Serious collectors prize the original finish because it shows a piece’s age and craftsmanship. Stripping that patina can lower market value. If the goal is resale, talk with an appraiser or restoration pro before sanding anything. For heirloom pieces you plan to keep, a careful refinish may still be worth it if it protects the wood and lets you enjoy the furniture every day.

Water-damaged or swollen wood is often repairable. If the swelling is mild and hasn’t warped the structure, a pro can dry the wood, sand it flat, fill any cracks, and seal it before applying the new finish. Severe water damage that has twisted or split the frame is more challenging—and costly—to repair and may necessitate partial replacement. Let a refinishing specialist assess the piece first.

Acrylic paint is a top choice for most wood furniture because it applies smoothly, adheres well to primed surfaces, and cures into a tough, long-lasting finish. When you prep correctly—clean, sand, and prime—you’ll get even color that stands up to daily wear. For outdoor pieces, choose an acrylic formulated for exterior use to add extra UV protection.
