"I reached out to Burt for help on some assorted home projects for a spare bedroom we are preparing for guests next month. Burt replaced a toilet seat, hung a curtain rod, took down some defective cat shelves from our wall and installed a new cat shelf for us. Burt also cleaned and polished (using supplies we provided) a nightstand and a dresser for us. The curtain rod, the cat shelves, the toilet seat replacement - all went exactly as planned. The bedroom furniture - OMG, I could not believe the difference! The furniture looks like when I bought it 20 years ago. I am so happy with the results. Burt was very pleasant from the start, offered fair and transparent pricing, and overall was a great person to have in our home. I already have another project lined for Burt for tomorrow, including refinishing a damaged wood cabinet. I'm immensely grateful for Burt's help. Very highly recommend. "

"Mike Sims did a terrific job, and I recommend him very, very highly.  He exceeded my expectations, and we are completely happy with the results of his work. <br /> He explained the alternatives and various issues related to the installation clearly.  He was easy to work with.  His price was excellent.  We scheduled the job promptly.  He showed up and did all of the work himself, across more than a week, very timely.  He was completely reliable, did an excellent job of installation, and everything looks great and works perfectly.  <br /> It was a completely satisfying experience working with Mike.  Everything went entirely smoothly; Mike was flexible and reasonable about a few small modifications in the job as it moved along. Just a perfect, simple experience having this work done.  Couldn't be happier about how the entire project worked out. <br />"

"My wife and I were amazed by the results. The finish on each chair is absolutely flawless and is a perfect match to the original and therefore to the table. The final lacquer coatings had the right gloss and in no way obscured the underlying finish. No swirl marks or streaks and a beautifully consistent finish. The chairs looked better than new. Refinishing can be expensive, but it's worth it if you want to restore quality wood furniture to its original condition--or better--and therefore preserve its value. Dennis Dunne is definitely the one you want to see for any refinishing needs. His skill, knowledge, experience, and practiced eye will serve you well. <br />"

"Most construction is straightforward. Contractors go by the building code, which they all know very well — better than the city, in fact. Tiger/Shelby did a great job. We have no complaints with their work. <br /> But the city of Santa Clara is another story. We applied for permits in January, and they were finally issued <em>this month — October!</em> But the city building department is still making us jump through flaming hoops. They are <em>never</em> satisfied, and they routinely change their arbitrary rules. <br /> We got stuck with a new employee/bureaucrat: Suzanne Park. She is absent more often than she is at work, but no one takes her place. She has already learned that she is completely unaccountable. <br /> Suzanne will not ever make a commitment, but rather, she seems to want to reserve the right to cause us further delays at her whim. It depends on her mood, and she contradicts herself at times. <br /> She has often been wrong in the past, and that has cost us time and money as a result. But Suzanne is totally unaccountable, and she knows it. <br /> Apparently these bureaucrats have no superior, at least that we have been able to determine. No one takes her place when she is absent. She seems to take pleasure in causing us repeated, unnecessary delays. <br /> We are simply adding a bedroom, but due to the city’s bureaucracy our costs and completion time are far more than we originally planned. <br /> So to wrap up: Shelby and Tiger Construction is fine. They are very conscientious and they do very good work. But my advice is to move to another city before building an addition — unless you7're with the 49ers. Then it's all smooth sailing. <br /> <br />"

FAQs for furniture refinish projects in San Jose, CA

A complete table refinishing project requires between four and eight days from start to finish. The actual hands-on work takes between two and 10 hours, with the remaining time dedicated to drying periods between applications. The stripping and sanding phases demand the most active labor, while applying finishes requires patience as each layer dries completely before proceeding.

Several elements influence dining table refinishing costs, with size being the primary factor. Larger tables or those with extensions require more materials and labor time. The wood type matters significantly—hardwoods may need specialized treatment compared to softer woods. The table's current condition also impacts pricing, as damaged surfaces need repairs before refinishing can begin.

Refinishing often proves more economical than purchasing a comparable quality replacement. Professional table refinishing costs between $150 and $400 on average, while preserving the original craftsmanship and character of your piece.

This approach makes particular sense for well-constructed wood furniture that would be expensive to replace with similar quality. For sentimental pieces or antiques, refinishing also maintains their history and personal value.

Professional furniture refinishers charge between $40 and $100 per hour for their services. This rate varies based on geographic location, the refinisher's experience level, and the complexity of the project. Some professionals offer project-based pricing rather than hourly rates, especially for standard-sized pieces like coffee tables or end tables. When requesting quotes, ask whether the estimate includes materials or represents labor costs only.

For tables with minor wear, you can sometimes refresh the appearance without complete stripping and sanding. Using gel stains and wipe-on finishes can address surface issues while preserving the existing finish underneath. This approach works best for tables with light cosmetic damage rather than those with deep scratches or damaged finishes. However, proper stripping and sanding remain necessary for comprehensive restoration or significant color changes for professional-quality results.
