"Excellent experience again with Alpha Structural. Charlie Rosenkranz came to see the 3-story apartment building in West Hollywood. We discussed what the soft story retrofit plans will likely include. He's knowledgeable and experienced. We appreciated his professional no-pressure approach and answering our questions. Alpha performed an exploratory investigation of the support structure, as architectural plans were not available. They engineered the plans with city approval. They then consulted with us and provided the approved THP (Tenant Habitability Plan) paperwork. Production Manager Dave Schlaich and Job Supervisor Seth Price met me before construction. Dave went over the approved plans and explained the work that would be performed, and the purpose. They both answered all my questions. Lawrence and Antonio were the main work team. They were very pleasant and answered all our questions. Both had great explanations with Lawrence being very detailed. Seth provided timely progress reports by phone and text. He answered all questions, and provided contacts for automatic shut-off gas valves and stucco work. Despite Covid-19, they scheduled and passed inspections, and completed the work in under a month. We've seen projects by other companies stuck in limbo for months with no progress, so we chose Alpha to avoid complications. They removed all debris, and left the property clean. The tenants and neighbors had no complaints. Daniel Aparicio also explained various issues. Communication with everyone, including the office staff, was excellent. We're very pleased with this experience."

"Structural Engineer Ehab contacted me about my residential property inquiry. He had already reviewed my property and the general situation I was inquiring about when I called him back. We spoke to me about his concerns with the project and answered all my questions over the phone. He was excellent to work with. Professional & Knowledgeable. Would highly recommend reaching out for technical issues concerning residential engineering. The reason he wasn't hired was that he provided feedback that dissuaded us from taking on a costly project that would not have achieved our stated goals. I will definitely reach out to Ehab in the future prior to beginning any major residential addition or remodel."

"We recently added a full master suite and a new retaining wall at ground level of our existing home. We interviewed several contractors and decided on Shenon Construction to build our addition. Tom Shenon is the principal owner and licensed general contractor of Shenon Construction. The estimated costs were reasonable and within our budget, and Tom worked with us to keep our costs down without sacrificing quality. More importantly, we felt a connection to Tom Shenon, as he is sincere and honest, but knowledgeable and professional in his approach to our needs. The work is now complete, and we are entirely pleased with the outcome of our new addition. Needless to say, the process of adding nearly 400 square feet to a structure, especially in Southern California, is a very complicated and detailed endeavor. There are many strict building and environmental regulations and permitting requirements set forth by numerous governmental entities, as well as homeowners association requirements that we had to navigate. The difficulty of getting through architectural planning, engineering, and city permitting was compounded during the COVID pandemic, but Tom and his design/architectural/engineering team did an excellent job to design our project and guide us through the processes and procedures necessary to complete the process timely and thoroughly. He is a competent contractor and knowledgeable in his field. He allowed us to select and purchase all owner-supplied fixtures and materials ourselves, or use his design and supplier team to obtain required items at the best prices. We used a mixture of contractor-recommended suppliers as well as obtaining our own selection of items based on our personal preferences. All of the subcontractors, project supervisors, and trade craftsmen were superb. They were courteous and respectful of our property, trustworthy, and extremely skillful in their trades. The craftmanship is amazing and resulted in a beautiful, comfortable addition. All the suppliers and subcontractors used by Shenon Construction went above and beyond to help us obtain needed items at reasonable prices in a timely manner. Based on the results of our project, we feel we definitely made the correct choice in Shenon Construction to complete our addition, and we consider Tom and all the craftsmen involved in our project to be long-term friends. We have no regrets, and we look forward to living in our lovely remodeled home."

"My experience working with By Marciano on my project was wonderful! Kobe and his workers are quick and responsive, and the communication with all of them was great all along. I interviewed a few people for the job and ended up hiring By Marciano after finding out that a co-worker of mine had a very good experience with them. My project was to build an addition and to reorder the floor plan for a house of mine. By Marciano designed and engineered it for me. Having done more than a handful of houses in the past I knew this project was not going to be the easiest, Kobe's knowledge and experience was put into the test a few times and proved to be extremly valuable. By taking his recommendations I saved thousands of dollars on construction, and his suggestions for floor plan design turned out to be much more efficient than the concept I had in mind initially. Costwize, from my experience, I feel like By Marciano has a very fair price mark and I know that the value I received exceeded what I paid for their great work. I will definitely be using By Marciano again and intend to do it in the very near future. <br />"

"I called Julian Construction based on their reviews. I had a couple estimates done for the work and Julian came in a bit lower than the other company. I decided to go with them since they did have the reviews to back up their work. I didn't make a mistake - they were great. The work was completed so quickly. Edgar, the team leader, was very responsive and was happy to explain everything they were working on including backing up the information with photos. I actually went under the house to check on the work daily and was impressed with how much they were able to accomplish so quickly. And they never left a mess behind when they left at the end of the day. My house is more solid now thanks to Julian Construction. <br />"

"We had a great experience with Carlos and his crew. His rates are competitive, he showed up on time, communication was good, crew was polite, and they did high quality work. For our newly-acquired mountain house, they removed a sunroom and returned it to its original 3rd story deck (and reinforced the substructure). Remodeled the master bath. Built an office out of some extra storage space, and added a large window for light. And re-floored 50% of the house with luxury vinyl plank. The house looks fantastic! They also handled the plumbing and electric work, so it was a one-stop shop. We'll be using Guzman Contractors again in October. Highly recommended. Carlos is a pleasure to work with."

"Jeremy at OC Structure Check was fantastic! He completed a very through evaluation of our entire structure. He explained what he was checking for during his inspection. He also provided several recommendations to strengthen the structure in a couple of spots where there were small cracks in the wood. We feel much safer now that we have had our roof structure evaluated and would fully recommend OC Structure Check."

FAQs for engineer structural projects in San Bernardino, CA

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
