"I found Devendra on HomeAdvisor when I was remodeling my home last year. I need a structural engineer for windows opening, resizing bathrooms, and bedrooms. The structural planning reports are needed for obtaining city permits and the later remodeling work. My project was on a tight schedule, so I was looking for someone who can act fast, professionally, and diligently. Devendra satisfies every aspect of my requirements, and the price is also affordable. He is very professional. He helped submit structural planning reports to get the permit in a timely manner, offered advice following up on my projects. I enjoy working with him, and would highly recommend him not only for his price point but also for the great service he provided. Thank you so much for your help."

"No formal inspection was done. We discussed issues over the phone and, with that information, I decided to work with my remodeling contractor for resolutions and further reviews. HC did respond very quickly and I'm very happy with the working discussion they had with me - it was at no charge. They provided an approximate quote for a formal inspection and written structural report that I think was reasonable and competitive. Humza was very helpful."

"We purchased a home a few months ago, and knew that we wanted to build an addition as well as remodel the kitchen. Living here for a few months now we also realized some other parts of the home could use an upgrade, like heating and electrical.
Goodfellas was one of several companies who we contacted to provide estimates and to walk us through their approach on such a project. Tom Levi of their San Jose office got back to use very quickly, and was able to meet onsite just a few days later. We talked extensively about our requirements, priorities and ideas, and we felt Tom had a great sense of what will be important for us and how he could help us make things work - both budget as well as time-wise.
We very much appreciated Tom's honesty and realistic expectation setting, which was nice to see compared to some of the "sales talk" we got from other companies.
Tom continued to be very responsive throughout the process, usually getting back to us within just a few hours and providing clear and concise answers and proposals.
We have now signed the contract for architectural/engineering/permit services - a first step in this larger project. And we are looking forward to starting the work with Tom and his team in January.

"I worked with Design Everest (Josh) when I needed to bring to code some unpermitted work on my home that had been altered prior to 1978. Design Everest was prompt to supply drawings of the structural work required. When my contractor found existing conditions that called for the engineers to review their plan, DE was very quick to review those existing conditions, change the plans and write cover letters (twice) to the City inspectors describing and confirming 'as built conditions' met code were sufficient from the original build. I am very happy with the end result, and although I questioned the cost of their bid at the onsite, I believe that what was discovered during construction and with the changes made, the cost turned out to be worth it the expense. I highly recommend using this firm."

FAQs for engineer structural projects in San Jose, CA

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
