"I found Devendra on HomeAdvisor when I was remodeling my home last year. I need a structural engineer for windows opening, resizing bathrooms, and bedrooms. The structural planning reports are needed for obtaining city permits and the later remodeling work. My project was on a tight schedule, so I was looking for someone who can act fast, professionally, and diligently. Devendra satisfies every aspect of my requirements, and the price is also affordable. He is very professional. He helped submit structural planning reports to get the permit in a timely manner, offered advice following up on my projects. I enjoy working with him, and would highly recommend him not only for his price point but also for the great service he provided. Thank you so much for your help."

"Kent spearheaded my project. He was able to cut costs by using my drawings and details. He was very fast - turn around was less than a week. I had to revise some non-engineering issues on the drawings and needed to have the revisions re-stamped. Kent was very accessible and was able to do it over the counter. Sezen and Moon was just what I needed."

"Leo and his team were incredible. They took all of the time they needed to give us very detailed plans that answered everything the contractor needed to know. Leo went above and beyond to answer all of our questions patiently, even the stupid ones (it was our first time doing a renovation so we had no clue what it was all about). I would hire him again in a second, and I strongly recommend him. He made multiple visits to our house to do the measurements and then to explain his findings when he delivered the final plans. He remained involved throughout the actual renovation to make sure everything was going ok."

"Our realtor set up an appointment for us with ABC Remodel to visit two houses that were on the market to determine approximate costs for remodeling the properties.  ABC Remodel met us at both properties, talked to us about how we would like to change the existing structure, and then gave us a rough estimate on what the work would cost.  We knew that it would be a very rough estimate, but we needed a ballpark figure in order to decided whether or not to bid on either of the houses.  I found both Orhan and Richard very easy to talk to and very professional.  They charged an hourly rate for the consultation ($115/hour)."

"My kitchen was in real need of an update. I contacted and met 4 contractors, including Green Bay Remodeling. After talking to Adir, I knew they were the right choice. Adir really listened to what I had in mind, and had great suggestions when I wasn't sure what to do with some items. I even decided to broaden the scope of the project and included flooring, lighting, painting and few other things across from the apartment. I wasn't home during the day when the project was ongoing, but I was regularly getting updates from Adir by texts. Jesus and his team moved at an incredible speed and kept the place as clean as possible. I couldn't be happier with both the process, and the final product. Everything looks just like I wanted. I'm definitely calling them back for my next project."

"Mulhall and project manager Eamon did an excellent job!  Project went smoothly and with very little cost overruns.  We were concerned given the size of the project and given we hadn't used Mulhall before that there would be a lot of extra costs outside of our bid.   But there were very few and the few costs overruns were reasonable.  Our structural engineer who had never worked with Mulhall before commented to us that they had done a very good job.  Eamon and his team were very responsive to our questions and concerns and worked overtime to make sure deadlines were met.  We would certainly use Mulhall again and would certainly recommend them. <br />"

"We received quotes from several other contractors who either charged too much, or said we couldn't add a second story. We worked closely with Shawn from start to finish and are incredibly pleased with the workmanship. He was patient with our questions and concerns, and all of the back and forth that comes with making big decisions involved in a home remodel. He's responsive and knowledgeable -- and continues to be -- even as the project has come to a close. It was a long process (15+ months) to add a second story above our garage and completely remodel our living area, garage, and kitchen; this included tearing down walls to increase our square footage, but it was definitely worth the wait. As others have noted, the pace of work hit some snags due to torrential rains and permit issues, but all things that are outside of our control. His team of workers are efficient and do quality work. We're pleased with how everything turned out and are amazed at what feels like a brand new home."

FAQs for engineer structural projects in San Martin, CA

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
