"It went very well, better than expected. He started outside, went around the house, checked the roof, went inside, checked everything from garage, to attic, to interior areas, basement, electric service panel, then back outside. John is a degreed RPI engineer, well worth the money over any other home inspector without equivalent knowledge and background. He gave us a very detailed report, including photos of how different items/areas in the home should and should not be, a list of life expectancy of various materials/items in the home and recommendations."

"Tim came and looked at our house for any signs of major structural problems. He was punctual and professional. He was very knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. Our concerns were with a "soft" floor we had in our very old house. Tim pointed out the signs we should look for regarding major structural problems, but found no major problems with our floor. He also referred us to some builders that could help us with our house in the future. Overall a great experience and would definitely call Tim again in the future. <br />"

"We bought a building that was going to be demolished in the Page extension/ Hwy 364 route.  We owned property adjacent to the building and had Expert House Movers move the structure approximately 1000 foot across a roadway and onto a new foundation.  I was amazed that they were able to do it without any of the brick fascade cracking/crumbling.  Before the building was lifted and moved, we inspected the interior of the building and took a black marker to areas of interior drywall cracking. After having them lift and move the building, there were no new cracks and the existing cracks were unchanged.  I couldn't believe it.  I would highly recommend them.  It's unbelievable to see the buildings and structures they have moved. <br />"

"pI purchased a house a few years ago which was under some definite distress and waived inspection so I was expecting some issues. <br /> However, the day after I purchased the house I received a code violation that my huge retaining wall needed to be inspected by an engineer. <br /> Rich showed up and did determine that the wall was about to fall, and i don't doubt that it was.. <br /> He drafted me new plans which were carried out by a professional excavator and ended up costing me about 12,000 dollars.. without these plans it would not have been possible to get the job done. <br /> Rich helped me go back and forth with code to get the project finally approved.. there were some real sticklers in the code office which you could tell just wanted to put in their 2 cents and Rich was able to "put them in their place" in a professional and prompt manner and allowed us to get the project going. <br /> Rich is not only a home inspector, but a legit engineer who understands the real math behind these problems and can tell you exactly what needs to happen in order to hold the weight and other factors which most of us would never understand. Many people can come inspect your home and tell you whats wrong, but not many of them have the certification to give you stamped plans to get the process actually completed. <br /> I would use Rich again in a heartbeat if I have other problems. <br /> What prompted me to write this review years later was that I have some structural issues in a new house I bought and Rich was very informative to me over the phone and really helped me get a project going.. and he had no reason to do this other than he is a good guy. <br />  So I just want to come here and encourage you all to give him a shot if you need a home inspection and plans. <br />"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Schenectady, NY

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
