"In advance of an upcoming party in our home, we concluded that our 35 year old wooden dining room chairs had become loosened, wobbily and perhaps dangerous. My Angie's List search yielded a number of names with high ratings. My phone contact effort settled me on Hudson Valley Restoration. After I described our problem, I was immediately informed that this was work that they routinely performed and that they could complete our job in around a week from when I dropped the chairs off. Since conversations with other craftsmen indicated a 3 week (or more) turn around, I was pleased to arrange to drop off the chairs the next Monday morning, in advance of a week-long trip out of town. Their location in Lansingburgh was easy to find and their facility (a remarkable old Troy toilet brush factory!) was a hoot. The price quoted to us was truly reasonable and the completion schedule was restated. The seat cushions and connecting bolts were removed and returned to us so that they would not get lost or damaged in the repair process. Shortly before we returned from our trip, I received a call informing me that our chairs were completed and available for pick-up! Upon our return, we brought our seat cushions back, they were reattached, and the chairs were as good as new. These folks are good! <br />"

"He was not at all apprehensive to dive right into a project despite my not really know what it was that I wanted.  In other words, I had no plans for him other than just talking it out.  But he listened and built exactly the kind of tree house that any boy would want. He showed up on time and exactly when he said he would come.  He planned out the project, gave me a very accurate estimated cost and he was very honest and forthright in his dealings.  He is a hardworking, project oriented kind of carpenter who won't let little things like winter weather get in the way!  We are very pleased with the work that he did and will use him again in the future. <br />"

"I called the Cabinet Doctor for an estimate. Jeff came out. He explained the process to us. They keep the existing cabinets but install new doors, hardware, veneer around the doors and end panels on the end of the cabinets. We had new drawers installed as well as converting some lower cabinets into deep drawers. Our old lazy susan was replaced with a new modern version. The whole process is called "refacing" costing roughly half of what it would be to replace the entire cabinets. The doors are solid wood not a composite and finished white in a material we never have to paint. Jeff was very professional explaining all available options. He showed us pictures of completed projects and offered us the option of contacting previous clients for references. He told us it would be 10 weeks before they could do the install. I gave him a deposit. About a week later the installer Rick came out and took measurements, I asked him about the microwave and he was very knowledgable about the ducting and electrical work for that part of the install. They were able to do the install about 4 weeks ahead of the 10 weeks they quoted. The install took 3 days. There were some minor problems with the curio cabinet (space between the top of the cabinet and ceiling, wrong color inside the cabinet) but Rick was able to take care of the issues professionally. There were basically 3 guys working and at the end of each day they cleaned up everything. Jeff, Rick and his crew did a great job. The kitchen looks brand new."

FAQs for furniture refinish projects in Schenectady, NY

A complete table refinishing project requires between four and eight days from start to finish. The actual hands-on work takes between two and 10 hours, with the remaining time dedicated to drying periods between applications. The stripping and sanding phases demand the most active labor, while applying finishes requires patience as each layer dries completely before proceeding.

Several elements influence dining table refinishing costs, with size being the primary factor. Larger tables or those with extensions require more materials and labor time. The wood type matters significantly—hardwoods may need specialized treatment compared to softer woods. The table's current condition also impacts pricing, as damaged surfaces need repairs before refinishing can begin.

Refinishing often proves more economical than purchasing a comparable quality replacement. Professional table refinishing costs between $150 and $400 on average, while preserving the original craftsmanship and character of your piece.

This approach makes particular sense for well-constructed wood furniture that would be expensive to replace with similar quality. For sentimental pieces or antiques, refinishing also maintains their history and personal value.

Professional furniture refinishers charge between $40 and $100 per hour for their services. This rate varies based on geographic location, the refinisher's experience level, and the complexity of the project. Some professionals offer project-based pricing rather than hourly rates, especially for standard-sized pieces like coffee tables or end tables. When requesting quotes, ask whether the estimate includes materials or represents labor costs only.

For tables with minor wear, you can sometimes refresh the appearance without complete stripping and sanding. Using gel stains and wipe-on finishes can address surface issues while preserving the existing finish underneath. This approach works best for tables with light cosmetic damage rather than those with deep scratches or damaged finishes. However, proper stripping and sanding remain necessary for comprehensive restoration or significant color changes for professional-quality results.
