"Gary took the time to evaluate my structural issue and wrote up an assessment. He also gave me recommendations for resolving the problem and explained what was wrong and what actions were needed for repair. I would highly recommend Gary for his expertise and experience in structural engineering."

"I'm working on a large project in the Pittsburgh area. The building was previously condemned despite being in good condition. In order to remove the condemnation, the city wanted a report from an engineer to verify that it was safe to occupy. Bob came to the site when he said he would and took his time walking throughout the entire structure. He was able to offer insight on how the building was constructed and advice on things we could do to reduce our construction and maintenance costs (which was WAY outside of the scope of work I was paying for). I was extremely pleased with his work. Many engineers & architects come across as dry and dare I say arrogant. Bob was easy going and polite. A breathe of fresh air in that line of work. I would definitely use Bob again and would recommend him to friends or family."

"I requested a quote and received a call back right away, but took a long time to get a call back after I gave the company the requested information. Then they called me a few days later to notify me that the Engineer did not want to do the structural inspection because I already had a failed retaining wall at the property. They also told me the engineer did not want his name involved with the inspection, I am not sure what that means. My wife and I required an inspection from a licensed engineer to do the report on what we already knew, all they had to do is come verify and provide a report for our lender. Not to mention that they initially asked for $950 on a 726 sq.ft. property. We decided to go with a different license Structural Engineer who was polite and charged a lot less than this company. He gave us his availability the same day, I did not have to wait days before I heard back."

"I believe that the inspector has a background in structural engineering.  The inspector was thorough in identifying potential problems and provided recommendations on how to address these issues.  He was courteous and patient when answering questions, and provided a very detailed and professional inspection report.  The company was very accommodating and responsive when scheduling the inspection.  Would recommend!"

"Roy is a very professional, very competent engineer.  I stayed with him for the entirety of his evaluation as we walked around my house taking measurements.  Being an engineer myself (although in a completely different field), I was curious to see what methods and techniques Roy would use.  He was very methodical in his evaluation... as he made measurements he explained to what he was doing at each step of the way, and occasionally asked me questions.   It was an interactive meeting, and at the end I felt like I had a better understanding of what was going on as well as what I should do to correct it. <br /> I will say that based on my technical background, Roy and I agreed that he did not need to write up a formal report, since we had basically discussed his evaluation as he was doing it.  This ended up saving me some money since Roy didn't have to make his report up. <br />"

"We are evaluating options to repair several conditions in the basement and after quotes from service providers that did not seem to be directed at the root problem, decided to call in an engineer. They discussed many of the options we had already considered and we were generally in agreement on what was most effective for our situation. <br /> They were able to provide guidance on one additional technique that we had not previously considered and a number of service providers that specialized in that technique. We are currently working with another round of contractors to implement the solutions recommended by Capstone. <br /> They were also very easy to work with logistically, providing advance advice over the phone, being flexible in scheduling and following-up via email post-walkthrough. <br />"

"In August Keystone Basement Systems & Structural Repair Inc. installed a steel-beam wall repair and interior drainage system which I described in a previous 5-star review. In short, all went well, my wife and I were very happy with the management (Aaron), the crew (Josh and Robert) and the work itself. But then a week or so later we got a big rainstorm. I was very disappointed to find water puddles stemming from the new drainage system. So I emailed Aaron. He immediately replied saying "we will get to the bottom of this [problem]". A day later, Renae Taylor (Head of Service) called and set up an appointment for Chuck A. to access the situation. Chuck showed up, diagnosed the problem and set a day to come and fix it. Chuck A. came and fixed, what to me looked like a two-day project, all in one day, all by himself. It was pretty impressive work. He's a great guy too! Keystone Basement Systems & Structural Repair Inc. stands by their work! From my experience with them, the warranty included in the project is as good as gold!"

"Carl was excellent to work with. While the concrete work was technically outside his company's scope, he worked with a local concrete expert that was also excellent. All work was performed in a professional and timely manner. All construction materials were cleaned up and removed from our property. All work was performed as agreed with no subsequent price adjustments. I'd gladly use them again."

"We had a structural issue with a bedroom above a attached garage. Had Mike out to a**** the situation and recommend a solution. He provided detailed mechanical drawings of the solution. We then used these drawings with the general contractor who did the repair. Mike is very knowledgeable and approachable. Had to call him numerous times with questions. He even had some recommendations of contractors that he worked with in the past. Highly recommend him and his company. Project turned out to be a success due to a large part of his thoroughness. <br />"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Smithton, PA

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
