"Basim called to enquire about what the work was the day after we bought the deal. He setup an appointment and came on time. Once he opened the ceiling fan package (which i bought at a local store) it became apparent i needed a longer rod because of the ceiling height. it took me a while to get the rod, but Basim was patient while he worked on other tasks.  <br />  when it was time to fix cabinet door hinges, he fixed all that we asked him to fix and looked at doors that he thought might soon have issues and fixed those hinges as well.  <br /> Basim did a fantastic job and stayed longer than the 4 hours and was  very professional. <br /> <br /> <br />"

"Mr. Pryor responded to our request promptly and offered several possible appointment times, all falling within the week. He arrived right on time and listened attentively to our concerns as we pointed to the evidence of structural movement we had observed. He then did a thorough, systematic review of the structure inside and outside. He spoke to us at length about what he was seeing and the implications of the shifting he observed, which fortunately were not as significant as we had feared. He recommended two repairs, explaining them in detail so we could tackle them ourselves or have complete information for a contractor. He suggested continued monitoring of the situation and that we contact him if we noticed that the evidence of shifting continued to progress. He did not charge for his services and graciously declined our offer to pay him for the hour he spent listening, examining, and sharing his findings. In summary, Mr. Pryor is a knowledgeable, personable professional who conducted a thorough review of the porch as we requested and explained his findings in a most helpful manner."

"We bought a building that was going to be demolished in the Page extension/ Hwy 364 route.  We owned property adjacent to the building and had Expert House Movers move the structure approximately 1000 foot across a roadway and onto a new foundation.  I was amazed that they were able to do it without any of the brick fascade cracking/crumbling.  Before the building was lifted and moved, we inspected the interior of the building and took a black marker to areas of interior drywall cracking. After having them lift and move the building, there were no new cracks and the existing cracks were unchanged.  I couldn't believe it.  I would highly recommend them.  It's unbelievable to see the buildings and structures they have moved. <br />"

"When looking for a home inspector I was looking for a licensed professional engineer who was also competent in structural inspections. Hugh Mullan is a Connecticut Licensed Professional engineer who did the inspections I listed. He was extremely thorough and the initial inspection lasted 3.5 hours. When he returned to pick up the radon sample, he did some repeat HVAC testing to ensure that his report was accurate. I highly recommend his radon testing. It is roughly a 48 hour test that records the radon concentration every hour. His inspection ensured that we were getting a structurally sound house but we also received $1500 from the sellers at closing to pay for some minor fixes."

"The original quote was to remove a tank. They quoted $4000 and that is what they charged me. However, we also had to do a lot of soil remediation and that was quite costly but not unexpected. He was very professional and very good about answering our questions. He sent me an email almost every night about what they were doing and what they had accomplished that day and would be doing the next day. They charged me what they said they would charge me. When we found oil underneath he gave us the cheapest and most effective solutions available. I would not use them again in the future only because I will never have that situation come up again. I would readily recommend them."

FAQs for engineer structural projects in South-willington, CT

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
