"I had structural engineer, Wesley Cullumber www.CullumberEng.com out to my house to evaluate the construction project for a room enclosure on a raised deck to determine what would be required for the building permit process.  If I had started with him, I would have saved so much time & money plus avoided the hassles of dealing with the county building department myself.  His visit had been offered as a free estimate, but I chose to pay him for the hour of his time & expertise after he provided such valuable information which kept me from wasting more time and money.   <br /> His past experience as a construction worker coupled with is training as an engineer gives him an excellent vantage point for evaluating construction projects.  I appreciated that he was honest and efficient- instead of dragging out the process and charging me for several hours of calculations that would have brought him to the same conclusion.  I plan to keep his contact information for any future projects and highly recommend him to others as well. <br />"

"This job went better than I expected. Professional drawings and very good input on cost savings and good ideas for optimum use of the home to fit our desires were all part of the job. Frequent updates and good collaboration for a fair fee for designing a 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath, 5 car garage 4300 sq.ft. custom home. Jeff did a great job of keeping us on track and doing work in good time. He didn't recoil or go crazy when we wanted to do some changes - prior to final prints. He's easy to work with even when we had very difficult issues and delays with the lot and the site plan."

"Austin also does mold inspections. We hired him because he said he would point out many building issues too.   <br /> We were renting a house and noticed some black mold.   Austin came over and found a ton of hidden mold, that the house was infested with termites (we had no idea), the roof was repaired horrible by our slumlord.  He found numerous code violations, and the lab results showed mold count levels that were way high.   <br /> Because of his report we broke the lease and abandoned the house. <br /> Extremely diligent, highly recommended! <br />"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in Strawberry-valley, CA

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
