"We had our 40 year old stained pine cabinets refinished, including removing old doors and drawers, modifying existing valances, sanding and painting the old frames, and installing new doors, drawers and hardware. The results were excellent... the kitchen looks like new. Jamie was very through during the consultation; explaining the process and making recommendations. A designer was available for consultation on colors, etc. during a later visit. The crews were on time took care to protecting surrounding areas. Overall the process took 4 days. I would highly recommend them."

"Meeting Susan was a completely enjoyable experience.   Her personality and knowledge were true to her web site - she obviously loves doing what she does.  She was very accommodating with the meeting schedule and took her time explaining to me the work that would be done to repair and refinish my furniture. <br /> <br />I have just recently retired and we are in transition with our new income, and our furniture is in storage, so we decided not to have the furniture repaired at this time. But I wanted to write this review to share the positive experience I had with Furniture Magicians.   Also, my husband will probably refinish the drop leaf table and Susan provided lots of helpful hints for a DIY job. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />I am still contacting her with pictures and requests for quotes on other furniture that I want to have repaired and Furniture Magicians will definitely be my go-to company. <br />"

FAQs for furniture refinish projects in Suffolk, VA

A complete table refinishing project requires between four and eight days from start to finish. The actual hands-on work takes between two and 10 hours, with the remaining time dedicated to drying periods between applications. The stripping and sanding phases demand the most active labor, while applying finishes requires patience as each layer dries completely before proceeding.

Several elements influence dining table refinishing costs, with size being the primary factor. Larger tables or those with extensions require more materials and labor time. The wood type matters significantly—hardwoods may need specialized treatment compared to softer woods. The table's current condition also impacts pricing, as damaged surfaces need repairs before refinishing can begin.

Refinishing often proves more economical than purchasing a comparable quality replacement. Professional table refinishing costs between $150 and $400 on average, while preserving the original craftsmanship and character of your piece.

This approach makes particular sense for well-constructed wood furniture that would be expensive to replace with similar quality. For sentimental pieces or antiques, refinishing also maintains their history and personal value.

Professional furniture refinishers charge between $40 and $100 per hour for their services. This rate varies based on geographic location, the refinisher's experience level, and the complexity of the project. Some professionals offer project-based pricing rather than hourly rates, especially for standard-sized pieces like coffee tables or end tables. When requesting quotes, ask whether the estimate includes materials or represents labor costs only.

For tables with minor wear, you can sometimes refresh the appearance without complete stripping and sanding. Using gel stains and wipe-on finishes can address surface issues while preserving the existing finish underneath. This approach works best for tables with light cosmetic damage rather than those with deep scratches or damaged finishes. However, proper stripping and sanding remain necessary for comprehensive restoration or significant color changes for professional-quality results.
