"As it worked out when I happened to call Paul (I believe he is the owner) was just finishing up a job not too far from me, and he said he could stop by and take a look at the washer on his way by. So he stopped a few minutes later and checked the washer and stated that because it had sat for two years, the grease inside the gear box had probably hardened over time and was no longer getting into the gears to keep the noise down. As he was turning the washer off and on, the noise started getting quieter. So he told me I could use the washer to see if eventually the grinding noise would quiet down more as it was used and if it didn’t get quieter or if the agitator wouldn’t turn at all, I would need to have the gear box replaced at a cost of about $350. which I’m hoping I won’t have to do. He charged me $80. for the service fee and said if I decided to buy a new gear box and have him install it, he would deduct the $80. off the total cost. I’m guessing that’s the going rate for the service fee to have a major appliance checked out. It was just a bit more than what I had expected, but it’s also been a very long time since I had to pay an appliance repairman service fee. I was happy to know that I could still use the washer and over the last couple of weeks, I do think it has been getting less noisy. The repairman was very polite, honest, and explained everything to me in a manner that I could understand. But now I have a new problem.....my dryer has stopped heating up. Not sure what that’s all about, so I guess I better start saving up for a new dryer!"
