"We hired General Remodeling Group to renovate our DC home and add master bedroom and mudroom additions. They handled everything from the design and permitting (via their architect), to building the foundation, framing, additions, remodeling a bathroom, widening hallways, installing flooring, drywall, HVAC, electricity, plumbing, installing pavers outside and pouring concrete driveway, installing a wheelchair lift, and more. They handled unexpected setbacks well, communicated effectively during the project, and finished the project on-time and on-budget. I would definitely hire them again, and recommend them to anyone doing a home renovation or addition."

"The installers did a very good job. The company appears to have gone out of business. There was corrective work which was required and the company was not around to honor its obligation to make it right. The manufacturer, Marvin, stepped in and corrected the installation issues."

"Our original contractor dropped off of the Facebook of the Earth, leaving us with mostly finished renovation and the new deck I started. I found 5thGen on Thumbtack and Christian was the most responsive and knowledgeable of the respondents to my search for fencing contractors. His team built me a gorgeous fenced-in urban oasis and the double lattice was his idea and custome made for our space. I’m attaching photos. He and his team then proceeded to repair our previous contractor’s errors (like installing new kitchen cabinets upside-down... really!) and did amaze my custome drywall work and mounding work. They even moved our challenger and you would never know the base had been relocated looking at the ceiling. Great great job, reliable and responsive on multiple projects for us since. Our relationship with 5thGen started at the end of 2015 and continues to date."

"I initially contracted with Vida and General Remodeling Group to build a deck for me. I was so pleased with their work that shortly after I asked them to remodel one bathroom and make major repairs on another. Their workmanship was of extremely high quality; their suggestions regarding design added significantly to the final product. Vida kept me fully up to date regarding progress and necessary changes. I would definitely utilize their services again."

"They were pretty good. We just had some difficulties with one of the people. They got the job done and everything. It cost a couple of thousands of dollars, but it was covered by insurance. As a matter of fact, I had a problem with a leak in the roof and it went all the way down the outside of the house and all of that. The price was fair."

"They installed 10 feet of metal railing with nice decorations.  I got 10 different quotes. Some were from Home Advisor. These guys seemed to know what they where doing and their price was really reasonable, so I hired them. Right after the visit to my house, they sent me a quote and I approved it. They had how long it would take for the fabrication and welding time, and they included a schedule for installation. They did it right in the time they quoted. I was very pleased with the job. I would recommend this company to friends and family members.  I will definitely use them again in the future."

"Derrick and Julio worked with me and my mother to ensure that her home was safe and sound! Her bearing wall and floor beams were weakened from a fire over 35 years ago. The work was excellent! They promised 3 days; it was done in 2! Couldn t have been done without Precision Consulting!!"

FAQs for steel beams (structural) service projects in Washington, DC

A steel beam weighs six to 12 pounds per linear foot, depending on its size and shape. That means a 10-foot beam rated at 10 pounds per foot tips the scales at 100 pounds. Commercial projects often use much larger members—some top 50 pounds per foot—so crews may need lifts or cranes to maneuver them safely into place.

On a new build, crews can slide a beam into an open frame in just a few hours. Replacing a beam inside a finished home takes longer—plan on two to three days—to shore up the structure, remove finishes, and work around plumbing or wiring. Your structural engineer will outline the steps, and you may want to stay elsewhere while the temporary supports are in place.

Yes—as long as a structural engineer signs off, swapping a load-bearing wall for a beam is a safe upgrade. A steel I-beam offers the best strength-to-size ratio and meets local codes with room to spare. Your engineer will calculate the load, specify the beam, and verify that the surrounding framing can handle the new setup.

Watch for rot, rust, cracks, or sagging—all red flags that a support beam needs attention. Water stains, uneven floors, or doors that stick can also point to trouble. If you notice any of these issues, call a structural engineer right away. Catching the problem early protects your home and can keep the repair bill from ballooning.
