"We hired a structural engineer even after our home inspector said he didn't notice anything about the wall. Due to FHA financing, the under writer wanted to see a report about the structural report, due to us writing that in as a contingency on a home offer. <br /> It went well. It was completed in an  hour. The engineer was thorough and explained everything in an understanding way. He gave the pros and cons about the support wall structure and saved us from buying a home that would need structural improvements! Highly recommend for those who are in need of a second opinion. <br />"

"Very well, Chuck was on time and was very polite. He inspected our basement walls and eased our concerns.( A large company had quoted us close to $40,000 to do an immediate repair. This company told us our basement walls were terribly bad and needed immediate repair.) Chuck gave us some advice, extend the downspouts and re-grade the yard. Chuck told us that there wasn't a problem with the basement walls. He eased our concerns and saved us a small fortune."

"One of their engineers came out to the house on a Saturday (which was nice) and spent about an hour going over what we were looking to do. He made the comment that this was a "play project" because he had worked on larger more corporate projects, and a residential should only take a few hours - and we'd have the plans within the week. <br /> Six weeks later, and multiple phone calls - I finally got the plans. The plans themselves were very very thorough - no complaints there at all. The two issues I had was being told that the plans would be ready sooner and how I was reminded by the engineer on two separate occasions that this project was "completely underbid and has taken him much longer than expected." <br /> Take away the semi-rude comments and overall the job was very well done. I would use this company again, but make sure that the lead time for your plans isn't asap. <br />"

"Through several in depth meetings, we met to discuss and share our ideas for the new residential home we intend to build in SE Wisconsin. We thoroughly enjoyed working with Nathan throughout the process. He was thorough, knowledgeable, professional and very easy to work with. He was extremely willing to work with us on our ideas and schedule. We have never built before, but Nathan was very patient with us, answering all of our questions and providing insight not only into intelligent design, but a great deal of information about current building processes and practices. We felt much more confident talking with builders armed with this knowledge. Everyone we've spoken with in the industry that knows Nathan has remarked how great it is to work with him. It is clear he has built a lot of respect from those who work from his plans. The cost of doing this with a professional was well worth it to get exactly what we wanted in our new home. We would recommend Nathan and Patera to anyone who is wondering where or how to begin this very complex process. <br />"

"Last year my wife and I had enough with our foundation problems.  Our back basement wall and side wall was cracked form the top of the foundation to the basement floor.  The cracks were so big that water constantly came through during and after heavy rains.  We called several different foundation repair companies, but none of them could provide us with what we knew we needed.  We needed a sixty foot section of our basement wall replaced, but none of the companies that we contacted could provide that service.  It wasn't until we contacted Frank Matyiko, owner of Expert House Movers, that we were able to get the assurance that a section of our foundation could be replaced.  Our friends asked us how they were able to hold our two story home up while taking out such a huge section of our foundation wall.  I tell them like owner Frank Matyiko said to me "we combine over 50 years of structural moving experience with 30 years of foundation repair experience and that's how we get it done."  He provided me with a structural engineer and obtained  the repair permits needed for the job, which no other company would provide.  Frank Matyiko oversaw the entire project from day 1 to completion.  Thanks for saving our home, EHM is awesome. <br />"

FAQs for engineer structural projects in West Bend, WI

To determine if a wall is load-bearing, start by checking your home’s original plans or asking a structural engineer. Exterior walls always carry weight, but interior ones only do if they sit over a beam or run perpendicular to floor joists. If a wall lines up with posts in the basement or falls directly under the roof ridge, assume it’s load-bearing and call a professional before attempting to remove it with a sledgehammer.

Calculating the wall load and sizing the beam must be performed by experts to ensure structural safety. You need a structural engineer to evaluate all load aspects and determine the proper beam dimensions. A professional engineer performs precise calculations and advises on any necessary enhancements, such as larger footings for support. An inspector then verifies that the revised structure meets all safety and code regulations before the finishing work begins.

Hiring a structural engineer is essential for ensuring your home remains structurally sound during any major renovation. Their responsibility is to deliver expert assessments and design recommendations for load-bearing modifications. The average cost to hire a structural engineer is $500, with rates ranging from $350 to $800. Consulting a licensed, experienced engineer guarantees that every structural project, whether constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one, is completed safely and efficiently.

Almost all load-bearing wall removals require a permit as they support everything above it, and building departments want proof that the new beam can handle the weight. Pulling a permit triggers plan review and inspections that confirm the work meets local code and safety standards. Skipping this step can lead to fines or being forced to rebuild later, so have your contractor pull the permit before work starts.

Removing a load-bearing wall to create an entrance for a carport or covered patio is a task that comes with defined cost implications. This modification requires extra structural adjustments to ensure safety and proper integration with the adjoining space. When you convert a wall into an entryway, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. The additional work required for this conversion reinforces the home’s integrity and ensures compliance with applicable building codes.
