"The crew came one day after my call. They removed a small tree from my front lawn, grinded the stump, removed the limbs and debris. You wouldn't know the tree was ever there. Excellent job."

"Excellent. Soil only went down 8 inches before hitting rock. They were able to break it up and get me 2 feet of soil down before hitting rock. They took care of hauling away the huge rocks and filled up hole with dirt and top layer of soil, seed, and straw. They did this for half my front yard where I needed more soil depth to plant large tree and also keep grass alive. They were upfront about everything and did a great job. They got it all done in 2 days. They are very professional and courteous. I highly recommend Wilson and his crew."

"As you can see from the list above, the property was in poor condition when acquired.  It was actually much worse than the inspections revealed, as much of the damage could only be determined once the work had begun.  For example, there were many parts where the siding was covering holes (i.e. no plywood or tyvek behind it); the roof damage was far more extensive than could be seen; many walls in the additions to the house were not properly framed; the sub-floor on one addition was rotted, and the joists were under-size; the beam supporting the garage apartment was under-size.
Although the house looked nice/had many nice features, it became evident that the work (additions and remodeling of the original house) had not been done by skilled or knowledgeable professionals, and had further deteriorated due to neglect and the weather.
We closed on the property in mid-December and had a very tight schedule to meet for moving in.
Mike Puckett and crew worked *through the Holidays* to ensure we met our schedule.  Throughout the process, he kept us well informed.  Whenever a new "surprise" came up (like the rotted subfloor) he made sure that we were aware of all our options.  I know enough about construction to understand that the cost quoted and options given were very honest.  I felt we received professional advice and first-rate work.  No up-sell/hard-sell/phony "problems" with Mike
Here's what we think about Mike Puckett Contracting... after the repair/renovation work is complete, we'll have more work we want done (an additional garage, etc.) - we are not even going to shop this work around: it's going to Mike Puckett

"EXCEPTIONAL WORK!!! My kitchen needed a huge facelift and wasn't sure how I can get my kitchen remodeled. Home Excel made this project fit within my budget and also provided financing options which helped to finance this project. I'll be contacting them again for my next project soon!! Thank you so much! I love being in my new kitchen!!"

"We hired PMC to install a 12x16 concrete patio in our backyard. Aaron came out to review the project with me. He was patient and knowledgeable, answering the few questions I had and providing feedback on how to deal with drainage. Unlike the other company that came by, they emailed a detailed estimate and the price was competitive. Although, the work was delayed because of weather, we were very happy with the finished result. We ended up opting to have the downspout extended and buried under the new slab. The project manager quoted a price which we excepted. However, because they were already in the process of excavating for the patio, he ended up discounting the additional excavation labor cost. I would use them again."

FAQs for excavation projects in Alexandria, VA

Depth depends on the type of installation and the regulations in your area. Water supply lines typically require 24 inches, while drainage pipes are often installed 36 inches below grade. For most general projects, a depth of 12 to 24 inches and a width of about eight inches is sufficient. Sticking to these specs keeps your utilities safe, code-compliant, and easier to maintain later.

When you need to run utilities underground, you’ve got two main options: boring or trenching. Boring employs directional drilling to install utilities without exposing a continuous channel, while trenching requires excavating an open channel to place utilities securely. Directional drilling preserves landscape integrity, whereas trenching provides direct access for installation, albeit with greater surface disruption. This clear comparison helps you select the method best suited to your project.

Plan on 12 hours to dig 100 linear feet when the soil is cooperative and you can work continuously. This timeframe applies when work is performed consistently and methodically. Factors such as rocky soil, tree roots, obstructions, and frozen ground increase the overall duration, demanding extra planning and effort. Comprehensive operational planning ensures that every challenge is managed efficiently and the project is completed on schedule.

If you want your yard to look untouched, laying fresh sod over the trench is the quickest fix. New sod needs 30 to 45 days to root and blend with the rest of your lawn. A local sod pro can provide you with a firm timeline and tips to ensure the grass takes hold and maintains your curb appeal.
