"I can’t emphasize enough how complicated this project was, it was far more complicated than moving a couple of boxes and reconnecting them. The previous owner had paved over the top of both boxes making it impossible to service them without tearing up the driveway. Additionally the leach field was on the other side of the driveway which meant all of the header lines had to be ran underneath a driveway and be able to withstand the pressure of being driven over. All of this required several months of prep work and permitting from the county before we got started. The Project was started and took about 3 days to complete. I have to say that Rick and his crew were consummate professionals and absolutely know their trade. This was an expensive but necessary project. I have about 20 years experience in commercial construction and know very well that under a person with less expertise this project would have cost even more and would have been a disaster. It is my humble opinion that for the money you pay and the work that you get there is no better septic repair company in this area. Rick is absolutely the best at his field and is very fastidious with the quality of the work done and the cleanup of the job site afterwards. If you only want to do a repair once and do it right A &A septic repair is who you need to call bar none!"

"I hired this company for an initial inspection of the septic system because their prices were lower than other companies. However, after the issues a failure certificate for the septic system, their charges to make repairs were almost double those of other companies. And they recommended repairs that were not necessary, increasing the price. I brought in two other contractors in the region to offer estimates of what work needed to be done. Both were significantly lower in price and did not pad the bill. I ended up getting the work done by another company and the septic system passed the county's inspection."

"The problems were strange and required some investigation. The team first focused on the washer drainage. Eventually they used a camera inserted into the clearance pipe to check the drainage pipe from the house to the septic tank. They discovered a "dip" in the pipe, possibly resulting in an obstruction that might have caused the water to back up, kind of like a rock in a stream. (Admittedly, I may not describe this as clearly as I should...not a plumber!). Using shovels and an excavator, they dug about 5 feet into the ground between the house and the septic tank, ultimately discovering both the dip/weakening in the pipe and a 3" crack (almost half of the pipe) closer to the house. I feel like their work saved us much more money down the road, because without investigating/fixing the "dip" in the pipe, we would never have know about that crack. Without repair, it could would likely have begun leaking back into the foundation. The team was able to replace a 10' section of pipe, connect it to the septic, and confirm a steady drain of water. We have not had the backup or any drainage issues since. However, the smell didn't completely leave the laundry room. They came out again and, after a couple of smoke tests and cuts into the drywall, discovered a vent pipe that had in years past (we've owned the house for 5 years) simply been cut to move the washing machine hookups to the side wall (rather than the back). Although the smoke largely discharged through the roof vents as designed, this uncapped vent allowed septic odors to creep back into the washing room, particularly in the morning when the air outside was heavier. They were able to cap the pipe, and that removed the odor. We have not had any issues since they completed their work. The team was very responsive, and worked with me to reschedule the washing room work after a death in one of the worker's family...only slipped a single day. They also reduced the cost for disconnecting/moving the washer and dryer, since they didn't reconnect them (We were of course going to have to do get drywall repair/paint work after they finished). Although I am hoping to avoid any plumber issues for a while, I know who I will call if something comes up. Absolutely recommend this team."

"Work performed on a leaking toilet. Arrived when he said he would, provided advice in the event of a similar issue with any other toilets, and let me know the condition of the toilet since it is old and probably installed when the house was built (1977). Very reasonably priced. I plan to use them for any future plumbing requirements/issues."

"I have to admit, this went way better than I thought. Austin and Brian H did a great job. We had our attic (and outside) HVAC unit replaced. They found a few things that needed completed/replaced/fixed to make the system optimal. I thought they might "hit me for a bunch of extras" at the end, but they did not. The replacement took longer than expected but that is because they stayed to complete all the extras to optimize the system. In a few months, we will have them take a look at our basement unit. Thanks again."

"The service person arrived on time assessed that my water heater (original to the house) should be replaced and help find one that would service the whole house and family going forward. The installation was quick and professional. The service person walked us through diy tips to keep the unit going for years to come. A+ Service."

"He was very professional when he came and talked to me at the house. I got 3 quotes (BGE $10,000, Horizon $12,000, and HGH $6,000) They weren't just the highest, but definitely not the lowest. He said a couple of thing aren't "up to code". When I talked to someone else about saying him saying these aren't up to code - he pinpointed that it was BGE Home. I guess that's how they beef-up their price. We did much investigation on the systems and my wife has some knowledge in HVAC systems. So I think we made the best and smartest decision to go to HGH."

FAQs for septic system repair projects in Alexandria, VA

Leach field failure can often occur due to a lack of proper maintenance, hydraulic overload, or environmental factors. When too much water enters the septic system—like running multiple large laundry loads back-to-back—it can overwhelm the leach field. Regular professional inspections, ongoing maintenance, and spacing out high-water-use activities help prevent failure.

A septic tank shows repair needs when noticeable symptoms arise around your home. Noticeable signs include strong sewage odors at fixtures, recurring pipe blockages, pooling water or damp patches near the leach field, and areas of unusually bright green or spongy grass. These indicators confirm that deteriorating components or clogs exist. Monitoring such signs and scheduling timely professional inspections prevents further costly damage.

Adhering to a strict, scheduled maintenance plan prevents septic system repairs. An annual inspection and a pump-out every three to five years safeguard your system’s performance. Additionally, only flushing waste and toilet paper, installing drain filters, keeping nonapproved items out of the system, and avoiding excessive water use help maintain your septic system’s health and efficiency.
