"We are new homeowners and had a hole in our septic tank made of concrete block, which was sending wastewater into the foundation/basement of the home. It was my first time using Angie's List, and I would recommend Illinois Sewer and Drain to anyone. Joe and his team of experts solved our issue immediately at an affordable price. They even went above and beyond to install a sump pump in our basement to help with the rain water. Quality work!!"

"Trust! I think trust is most important in choosing an expert to fix a problem. Of course experience, knowledge, ability and integrity are also needed. But trusting the reviews written by others or trusting the recommendation of a friend is sometimes all we have to go by. I had a clogged drain about 15 feet “downstream” from my kitchen sink. It was the result of overzealous use of the garbage disposal. I tried snaking the drain myself but the clog was too big (turns out about 2 feet of drain was totally blocked). I did research on several websites looking for a plumber in my area who I could trust to do the work right - at a fair price. I narrowed the list to 4 companies. At 7:15 PM on a weekday I called each of them. I got two answering services that could not answer any of my technical questions, another said they would have someone call me back “in a few minutes” (never happened) and then there was Dmitry. Dmitry is one of the owners of CJ Plumbing. He answered the phone himself. He was able to discuss my issue intelligently, explain the likely scenarios and give me an estimated price range (min and max) for the job. It was clear from his questions and his input that he understood the problem and knew the likely solutions. As it turns out, he was absolutely correct about the issue and what it would take to fix it. I wanted to consider what he said before making a commitment. He said I could call him back anytime in the next few hours. I called several hours later and again he answered the phone and we scheduled a visit for the following afternoon. The plumber who showed up (not the person I spoke to) was a delight to work with. He was professional, polite, and patient as he answered my many questions. He tried a few “easy” options to fix the problem (e.g. using a powered drain snake). When those did not work he said the best option was to cut out the clogged section of drain (which he had located) and replace it with a new section of pipe. The clogged part of the pipe included two 90 degree bends. He removed that section and replaced the sharp bends with pairs of 45 degree bends to allow waste to pass through the more easily. The drain pipe ran along the ceiling of my unfinished basement so there was direct access to the pipe. After replacing the section of pipe he verified that there were no leaks and cleaned up the area of the basement where he worked as well as the area under the kitchen sink. He even cleaned the sink. I was VERY pleased with his work and with his personality. The cost of the repair was within the range quoted on the phone (though near the higher end). My trust in CJ Plumbing was rewarded by their performance and their honesty. I would definitely use them again and would recommend them to friends and family. I recommend them to YOU."

"I purchased my house about 6 months ago.  It has had non-stop plumbing problems, including needing a new hot water heater the day I bought it.  I've had 5 or 6 plumbers out for different issues and had to deal with people who couldn't find the problem, did sub-par work, or wouldn't return calls.
When I smelled a gas leak near my hot water heater, M & E came right out and installed a new valve.  A few days later, I was still noticing a gas smell.  They came right back out and replaced another part free of charge that had been overlooked.  This is the kind of service I value.  Dealing with the various issues in my place has shown me plumbing is not an easy task, and I really appreciate a professional that is willing to make sure the job is done correctly.  Looking forward to having them out for additional work in the future!

"This was the second company I had called in to have this repaired - water backing up in utility room. This time the job was diagnosed accurately and corrected properly. I was very happy with the service."

FAQs for septic system repair projects in Chicago, IL

You should have your septic tank inspected at least once every one to three years. Regular inspections help catch minor issues before they become major problems, ensuring your system operates efficiently and extends its lifespan. You can also have your pro take care of routine septic system maintenance tasks at the same time as your inspection.

A septic tank must be inspected before buying a home to ensure the system is sound and compliant with local regulations. A comprehensive inspection evaluates all critical components and detects hidden faults that could lead to expensive repairs. This detailed review protects your investment by verifying the system’s integrity and reliability.

A septic tank's leach field fails when it encounters system overload and deteriorating conditions. Excess water usage beyond the field’s capacity and environmental stress lead to hydraulic failure. Aging infrastructure and insufficient maintenance further contribute to failure. Distributing water use evenly and scheduling regular maintenance, including enzyme treatments when necessary, preserve the leach field’s integrity.

A septic system lasts between 20 and 30 years. Steel tanks function for 15 to 20 years, concrete tanks operate for 20 to 40 years, and fiberglass or plastic tanks remain durable for 30 to 40 years. Consistent maintenance, including regular pumping and inspections, extends these lifespans by preventing buildup and structural damage, ensuring reliable long-term performance.

A failing septic system presents clear signs such as slow-draining fixtures, foul odors at or around the leach field, and overly green patches of grass. Additional indicators include persistent toilet flushing problems, standing water near the system, and noticeable gurgling noises from pipes. These symptoms reveal blockages, structural damage, or leaks. Immediate professional evaluation is essential to address these issues and prevent extensive repair costs.
