"Contacted Total Comfort as soon as we realized our unit had stopped blowing cold. Unfortunately it was in the evening and after hours (isn't that always the way). Received a call back from an on-call technician within just a few minutes. I explained what was going on and he was more than willing to jump in is truck and head over but was very straight forward and explained that he could diagnose but there was always a possibility he may not have the parts needed that night. I hadn't considered that and was appreciative of his candor. Thunder storm rolling (thankfully) so I knew the temps were going to drop for the evening and told the tech I'd push the service call until the next day. He asked that I contact the office first thing to get on the schedule. Next morning I received a call from Total Comfort before I could call them and they scheduled a tech to come out between 1pm and 4pm that afternoon. A little before 1pm, the tech "Alex R" called to let us know he was on his way. Yes, that's correct. They set a service window between 1pm and 4pm and they actually showed up at the beginning of the quoted service window not and hour or two after it (which seems more the norm for service contractors). Skipping ahead to the most important part... Alex was awesome. Not just punctual but extremely polite, knowledgeable and efficient. He diagnosed the problem, offered the solution, answered our questions, asked for authorization before proceeding and didn't try to up-sell. That's the support a homeowner expects. Thanks Alex and Total Comfort."

"After moving to a new home, I had to repair one of the heat pumps (one of four in the home).  I had several companies come out to provide estimates that ranged from $9,000 for a repair to $30,000 for replacement.  One company refused to even give a quote on repair.
I called Merryman's and they sent out Ricky who repaired the heat pump within days (he had to order a compressor) for $2,300.  A few days later, I noticed a breaker tripping on another unit and called again and they were out that Saturday with a new compressor to repair a second unit.
While they were there, I discovered yet another unit wasn't cooling a wing of the house and asked Ricky to take a look at it.  Thankfully, it was my mistake as I had configured a Nest Thermostat incorrectly and Ricky quickly diagnosed and fixed the problem at no cost.
While I save up for GeoThermal replacements, I wanted to repair the current system and Merryman's gave me a few more years of life out of the current system at half of what other companies would have charged.  There was no hassle, just honest work and an honest price.
I highly recommend Merryman's and won't personally bother calling anyone else if I have any issues with HVAC in the future.

"Our AC had stopped working today. I always check Angie's list first for all of my home repair needs and found DM Select Services as a top recommendation and local in the Winchester, Virginia area which is what I prefer. Within 3 hours of my call the DM Select Services HVAC specialist, Andrew, arrived and 3 hours after that he had completed the repairs. Andrew was polite, professional and considering the accumulation of gunk in/on the attic unit, had amazing patience with the challenges of getting into our attic and cleaning up and repairing the problem. I sincerely appreciate all of the assistance and attention to every detail."

"By the time the service rep was contacted and he called us, we had purchased the part and repaired the air conditioner unit ourselves. We had hire the service company to do a complete service on the unit on June 23,2022. I would recommend Freedom Heating and Air to anyone needing service. They were very professional and did a thorough job. They explained what they were doing from beginning to end. We were shown pictures of before and after as they did the work. We will use them again if it becomes necessary."

FAQs for window a/c unit service or relocation projects in Amissville, VA

If your window air conditioner is relatively new or of high quality, repairing it can restore optimal performance and protect your investment. However, for older units or those with ongoing issues, it might be more cost-effective to replace the unit to ensure long-term efficiency and reliability. Consider the unit's age, the severity of the problem, repair costs versus replacement, and energy efficiency ratings when making your decision. If repairs cost more than half the price of a new unit, replacement is typically the better option.

Window air conditioners last eight to ten years on average. After this time, you may notice decreased efficiency and component wear. Replacing an older unit can improve energy savings and provide updated features like remote controls and better overall performance. With proper maintenance including regular filter cleaning, coil checks, and professional servicing, you can maximize your unit's lifespan.

If your portable AC isn't cooling, it might have a refrigerant leak or a circuit malfunction that's preventing it from working properly. It's best to contact a local air conditioner contractor to inspect and repair the unit. If your AC is older and repairs don't fix the issue, replacing it might be the most effective solution.

Removing a wall-mounted AC costs $55 to $75. Completing the removal yourself at the end of each summer season, being sure to do so according to proper guidelines, keeps you within this cost range. Should you require professional assistance for removal and disposal, if you can't move the unit yourself, expect an added fee of $25 to $50 to the overall cost.
