"We unexpectedly had to repair our wood floor while doing a kitchen remodel. They were able to locate the matching wood, piece in the boards and refinish the room to an exact match to the adjoining room. The team was very professional and efficient. I would highly recommend!"

Small jobs welcome

"I have old maple flooring that was always hidden under linoleum. I had little hope that the floors could be refinished because they arenâ t really hardwood. Larry was able to sand them down and stain the floors to match the woodwork trim. He was very aware of the dust it can create and contained it. There was no mess for me and the two rooms he did are holding up beautifully. I would recommend this company without hesitation."

"These guys are so completely trustworthy, and very competitively priced! I was impressed with there creative thinking, as this project involved turning a bedroom into a bathroom in our second floor. It's a very old house so there were lots of "quirks" they had to deal with. I can't recommend them any more highly, and the fact that they are people of good character makes a big difference, too. I'm going to be using them again!"

This is my second review for this company. Last year (as reviewed on Angie's list) this company did the floors in our previous home.

We had our floors in our previous home done by this company last year and we were so impressed with the knowledge and expertise that they showed that when we were able to buy our "dream" Victorian home unexpectedly, we did not quote this out. We simply called to tell them to come do the floor.

The floor in our new home is Tiger Oak with a Walnut decorative inlay. If you know something about hardwood, Tiger Oak is not available anymore other than through salvage. So if you want to have it refinished, you have to make sure it is done right as you really can't replace mistakes with similar wood. To complicate matters, the inlay was laid with the grain in multiple directions.

The home we bought was built in 1899 and was neglected in the past several decades. The floors had rot and water damage, but were worth saving due to the rarity and beauty of the wood. Brian was honest with us in that the floors would need a special sander due to the opposing grain inlays and told us even if we did not choose his company, to make sure the company we did chose had the right equipment (and explained what that equipment was).

Because Tiger Oak was not readily available to repair the damage, Brian talked with us about how we could harvest strips from the back of closets to repair the more visible damaged areas. He could have charged us a massive premium to track down salvage wood, but offered us an affordable alternative instead.

The end result was wonderful. The damaged areas were repaired, the floors were brought back to their original splendor and we are pleased beyond what words could express.

If you have a tricky situation with your floors due to age or complications, Brian's expertise is well worth at least getting a quote from. He obviously knows his work and is an honest craftsman doing the work.

"National was great. They were able to start earlier than expected and the vinyl plank floors are beautiful. They even replaced the sub-floor in one of the rooms and removed some unlevel tile at no additional cost."

"The quality of Danny?s work is excellent. Danny went above and beyond the description of the job and exceeded our expectations throughout the job. Danny made helpful suggestions, and kept in touch with the stores providing the material so that the job would not be delayed due to material not being available when we needed to install it.
We have never experienced a contractor who was more considerate of our property, who cleaned up the job site every day (not just at the end of the job), and made sure that we were as inconvenienced as little as possible. The tile install on the floor involved removing the toilet, and Danny made sure that it was unavailable for only one day.
We cannot recommend Danny highly enough. His price estimate was very competitive with the other bidders on the job, and he stuck to that price. He is very dependable, and always arrived on the job when he said he would.

"I was in need of some repairs to ceramic tile, hardwood floor and carpet. They came out and gave an estimate for all three repairs. They were lower than another company. I had cracked tile on my hearth, they came and removed the tile, put cement board down and then installed the tile and put a trim around the edge as it's higher than the previous installation. The hardwood floor we thought we would have to replace 7 boards, but after sanding, it's salvagable without replacing it. The carpet repairs were to some damage areas between rooms. I had pieces of new carpet from the original installation. They put in a new section and then used that part to replace some smaller spots.  All the repairs were done quickly and professionally.  They were very protective of my floors and put carpet padding under their tools.  They cleaned up quickly when done.  I would use them again for repairs or installation.

"We had a flood due to a water supply line break in our under our kitchen sink.  The cabinet under our sink, as well as our hardwood floors were extremely wet due to the amount of water that gushed out of the burst lines.  Additionally, our basement was also affected (it was raining through the ceiling) and the ceiling and floor tiles were ruined.  Puro Clean came out that day, inspected the damage and brought in the equipment the next morning.  We were very happy with the professionalism of the Puro Clean staff and are confident our home is sufficiently dry to make repairs to affected areas.  We cannot comment yet on the price as we have not received a bill yet."

FAQs for wood flooring refinish projects in Ashtabula, OH

The hardest wood floor finish is aluminum oxide, but it only comes on prefinished boards. If you want something durable you can add after installation, acid-cured is your best bet. The key to the longevity of any type of wood floor is a maintenance coat when a traffic pattern begins to show in high traffic areas.

Moisture-cured urethane is the most durable finish for homes with pets. However, It contains a lot of (VOCs) that can aggravate pets and people, especially at first. If you’re looking for a low-VOC alternative, water-based polyurethane is your best bet.

Bona sells several highly-rated polyurethane hardwood floor finish products, typically through small, local distributors. Brands like DuraSeal or Minwax also rank well for durability and ease of application. They are available at businesses such as Walmart and Amazon.

You have to seal unfinished hardwood floors to protect them from scratches and stains. The frequency depends on the type, but in general it’s ideal to refinish them between four and six times in their lifetime. This comes out to about every seven to 10 years.

Refinishing hardwood floors costs $1,100 to $2,400.

Wood stain adds a color to the surface. A finish adds a level of shine (e.g. matte, low-gloss, high-gloss) and seals the grain to protect against damage. Some companies, such as Minwax, offer products that do both at once.
