"After setting the intention of finishing my basement, I knew I was going to be meeting with at least a dozen GCs in the Lehigh Valley area. As a homeowner, this is a massive investment so I was very careful in my selection process. After meeting with John Zyskowski, it was very clear to me that he was a level above all the other GCs that I met with. John was one of the very few that had a strong professional background as a GC in home building. And for what he was offering in our agreement, the pricing was very reasonable. I was very specific with him that I wanted a soundproof basement from the rest of our house, so that I could enjoy my home theater sound system without bothering people upstairs, and he absolutely delivered on that. Other aspects like the plumbing for the full bathroom were very complex, but with Johnâ s experience it was no issue for him. He is very easy going and friendly. He will never put pressure on you as a client and will listen to what you want most out of your finished basement, that was what I appreciated most. I highly recommend setting up a meeting with him."

"I highly recommend Lux Renovations/Owens Corning Basements for refinishing basements. The initial consultant was highly professional and it never felt like he was a ‘salesman’ with high pressure tactics just trying to get his commission. I have never refinished a basement before and assumed it would be the same as any other room in the house but I felt extremely reassured about the materials and methods used to keep the basement in the best condition as possible. When it came to the instillation, I cannot speak highly enough of the people that made it happen. They were prompt, hardworking, considerate, and there was never a moment we were concerned about having people we didn’t know in our home. The results are wonderful. Our basement was feeling like a dingy place we just put stuff but now it is open, clean, and an enjoyable place to be."

"From the first call until our final walk-through, Matt made the process easy, fair, and enjoyable. He was highly responsive, making sure our questions and concerns were addressed promptly. We enjoyed the process because things were organized and Matt did a great job making sure we were always aligned and aware of what was happening and when. He also made sure that if something didn’t go correctly, he took ownership when appropriate and quickly worked to resolve any issues that came up along the way. We have already recommended Taproot to a few of our friends!"

"Rigas is a true pro! No BS. The guy is punctual, professional, and more than fair. His work was done at my shop a few years ago and is holding up very well! He also used a non toxic finish which I greatly appreciated. Don?t hesitate to reach out to Rigas for a variety of carpentry needs and anything else in the construction realm. If you need it done I?m confident he can do it!"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Bethlehem, PA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
