Customers say: Quick response

"MNM did an excellent job hanging wallpaper in our nursery. The wallpaper looks terrific and there were some difficult parts to the job. MNM was easy to deal with at a reasonable price and handled everything very well. I would hire them again."

"TL Ryan is customer oriented.  Mixed reviews on the subcontractors hired to do the painting.  I hired this company for two separate jobs that totaled 9K.  Big investment - mixed results.  Main rooms (living, dining, first floor bedroom) turned out nicer than closets and upstairs bedrooms which showed sloppier work.  On the last day, during the walk through, one closet was overlooked and the painter rushed through it, resulting in a closet that was not primed properly so the original blue can be seen through the white.  Several closet shelves were also missed and again the rush job shows - poor brushwork, no priming.  They also did one coat of semi-gloss on the door trims (a second coat would have cost more money), and the quality of that job varies greatly.  First floor - neatly done; second floor, sloppy brushwork (I have to re-do myself and with carpal tunnel, that will not be fun).  They also left the house a mess - nails everywhere, wall plates on the floor, curtains in a pile on the sofa.  TL did most of the cleanup himself and replaced some missing wall plates at no cost. <br /> For the second job (same house), I hired them to paint interior doors  - they charge for each side of the door (so one door is actually two doors for pricing purposes) - and paint drywall, and to repaint and re-tread steps.  Work was fine (a different subcontracting crew was used this time).  There were two incomplete areas:  I asked that the hinge footprint on the trim of a door that had been removed to be painted - this was not done.  In addition, they replaced treads on basement steps but did not tack them as they were directed (supposed to be eight tacks total - four across the top; four across the bottom - they only put four in the overall tread).  Interestingly, once I paid the final price, the normally responsive TL did not respond to my request to have these two final items fixed.  So again, I had to fix what was missed. <br /> Both projects in the same home were to prepare for sale - so I hope to recoup these costs.   I would not use this company for the home where I live.  I think they are a little pricey because of the use of subcontractors and on balance a little too sloppy in areas that I would not want to look at every day (or have to re-do myself). <br />"

"Al provided quick service and was pleasant to work with. The quality of the work was good at a reasonable price. He and his men also washed our windows, inside and out including storm windows. Stormy weather has resulted in a delay in finishing the painting of one garage door and some clean-up, hopefully to be done when we have a dry, sunny day"

"<p>The did an excellent job. Very timely. the arrived at 7:30 every morning to review things with me before I went to work for the day.</p> <p>They made sure that everything was protected and covered up as the removed the paper and painted.  My ceilings are very high and they did excellent work. the previous home owner ran wallpaper boarder all the way up the wall to the ceilings.</p> <p> They did a great job painting. Before they were finished that had me inspect everything before the left the job.  I would recommend them to anyone!</p> <p><br /> </p>"

"Before we moved into our house, Petr came out and was among several painters to provide a quote. I went with him because he went into great detail about the level of work and also provided consultation and recommendations on what he thought would work best and what it would cost. I was looking for this advice, and other painters were disinterested and frustrated with me not knowing what to ask or having exactly what I wanted at the ready. The work that he did was incredibly detailed, with a heavy amount of prep to make sure it was done right. They did the usual sanding and cleaning but also did extensive patching, fixing of seams, removal of wallpaper and it is seamless. They also painting 5 rooms, including detailed built-ins and a stairwell. We then had them back this week to do another stairwell, hallway, ceiling, and foyer. Both times they were available quickly, and finished in less than a week. They were clean and unobtrusive. My toddler asked if we got a new house when they were done. It feels like it!"

FAQs for wallcovering or wallpaper removal projects in Chicago, IL

You can determine your wall type through tactile and visual tests. Start by checking the surface by inserting a thumbtack, feeling the texture, tapping to listen for a hollow sound, and examining cut edges under outlet covers. Drywall feels soft with a hollow sound, while plaster is hard and solid. These checks are especially useful in older homes where plaster is more common.

After removing wallpaper, you can dispose of small amounts in your household trash. However, if you are removing wallpaper from your entire home, you’ll need to contact a waste removal service, rent a dumpster, or arrange a special pick-up with your municipality’s waste service. Wallpaper cannot be recycled, so it is important to keep it separate from the recycling stream to comply with local waste guidelines.

It takes a professional from several hours up to a full day to remove wallpaper from a single room. The removal duration depends on the type of adhesive, the age of the wallpaper, the condition of the wall, and the number of layers present. High ceilings and additional layers increase the time required, as extra care is taken to protect the wall surface while ensuring a complete removal.

Using fabric softener with water is an option for removing wallpaper, but its effectiveness is limited and depends on the type of wallpaper being used. This low-cost method is most effective on modern, less porous wallpaper and may not yield optimal results on vintage or textured varieties. It might also affect wall surface preparation for new coverings if the residue is not completely removed. For stubborn adhesive or textured surfaces, professional solutions are recommended to ensure a thorough removal without damaging the underlying wall.
